    Default Shakin'

Terns have a large repertoire of cool behaviors, and this is one of them. They hover over the water looking for a fish and then dive into the water to catch it. When they come up from the water they do a head and body shake (kind of like a wet dog) to get the water off. Photographing the shake can be a little tricky because maintaining AF can be challenging as the terns emerge from the water and start to fly up. Most of my frames have a nicitating membrane over the eye, but not this one.

Doug, good detail throughout, and well exposed. I like the shaking pose, together with the flying droplets, and you have achieved excellent sharpness. I would maybe added a bit more to the bottom.

Amazing, very good detail in blacks and whites, the sharpness and right on focus really help me see the behavior of the bird. The droplets really add to the image too. TFS

Amazing capture....I have tried my hand and failed miserably...so I know the importance of such a clean shot.. How do you keep focus when they are doing it? Do you use back AF button?

That was all the canvas I had Stuart, but I do agree with you.

I do use back button AF (the middle button), but I don't think that it's the only way to get sharp images. I think the key is to focus on the bird as it emerges from the water but then let up on focus. Keep the bird in the center of the frame, reacquire focus, and then start firing. Terns do the head shake a variable length of time after they emerge from the water, so track the bird until it does the shake.
