    Default Gavia immer fractaliensis

Back from a week at the cottage on Horseshoe Lake near Parry Sound, Ontario and see that I have missed many great images in my absence. I spent much of the time floating in the lake to beat the heat and teaching my daughter to swim. When things would cool off slightly in the evening hours I would go out in the canoe to shoot the Common Loon. This year one pair of loons successfully hatched two chicks, but one has not survived. The remaining chick is doing well and diving on its own now.

As a point of interest, I noticed when reviewing my loon images this year, that the upper bill on one of the adult loons was broken. I remembered shooting a loon at the lake with the same broken bill many years ago. I looked back and that bird was photographed in May 2006 - most likely it is the same bird I shot this week.

After applying Fractalius to this one I masked back in the eye and 50% of the background and tweaked the image a little bit in Viveza.

    Look forward to comments.

    Hey Andrew,
Sounds like you had a great time with the family!!! Nice to hear the stories and effort you took!!!

I love the details that Fract bought out in the head....but it almost looked like noise in the BG....any eliminate it there. I would also recommend removing the blue riple around the bill....althoough I would wait for more feedback on that. The eye really pops....so nice job tweaking that!

Hi Andrew, I like the detail in the bird the filtering brought out and the "fill the frame" portrait. Agree with Roman's comments and I might give it just a bit more room on top.

This is one of the nicest fractalius images I've seen for a while. I would agree on removing the blue around the bill, if possible. Very nice.

I love the details in the Loon! Great to see one close up, and get a good view of the beautiful markings. Fractilus works well here.

Andrew, Beautiful image and effect! I love the colors and that eye is awesome. I might give it a little room on top. Nicely done.

Really enjoy the detail brought out in the Loon. Agree with others concerning the blue ripple at the bill and adding some to the top. I'd also like to see the ripples directly in front of the Loon backed off a little from the treatment.

Andrew, glad you're back - it looks like you had a productive trip I would like a little more room on top, I love the fractalius effect, I'm OK with the water at the front and the lines in the bg - to me they've always reminded me of batik. (I hope you're got more loons - I've never seen one and they fascinate me.)

Thanks for the comments folks very much appreciated! Here is the repost with suggestions applied.

Noise reduction on background, more room at the top and blue around the bill removed.
