I know the perch isn't great but he seemed to like it. At least he wasn't buried in lots of foliage. Mark III, 500mm + 1.4 tc, @5.6 1/200, ISO 500, manual. I hoped he wouldn't fly off before picking up his head....bugs can be so fasinating to a woodpecker.

    Hey Carole,
The perch might be a bit large.....but it is a natural one....which I like. Light looks great although I am debating the focal point. Looks like it should be there....so another round of USM may do the trick. I'd push the ISO on the Mark lll at leat to ISO in these situations....given your setting ISO 1250 and some NR later would and should be an option. Just another tip.....Petsmart and similar stores here in the US.....have mealworms for sale. If this is a setup....may be worth a trip and some time. Just soem food for thought. Great BG by the way!

I'll cut to the chase Carole- this is a super portrait for many reasons but for the softness of the image. At the very least it has to be sharp. The image does respond to sharpening. Give it a try.

Great capture without any interference. Colors are vibrant and tail feather position is a plus for me! Love the red belly too. TFS.

This is a good pose and comp Carole but it looks like the slow ss made it a little soft.

Carol....as noted above sharpening is the main thing you can do to improve this wonderful image. I like the perch and your bg is terrific. The head is a bit too red for my tastes so you might consider lowering the sat of the reds
