When I first saw this little Burrowing Owlet I thought he might have been sick and would not make it but it turns out he just has rare brown eyes for this species.

What a great find Don, congrats!!!

I would CW rotate a tad to give less of a falling over feeling.. FWIW

Can you pop them brown eyes some more? if so it might add more to the rarity of this find.

    Hey Don,
I've never seen one with that colored eyes. I like Chad's idea on tweaking the eyes....but be careful to not overdo it! I like the idea of the rotation....but am fine with it as presented also. As for DOF....you know I always want more....but having been there I know it could introduce too much of the BG.....so I'd keep it as is. What a great find!!!

In the Raw file the eyes are completely black from the shadow cast from their brow this is the best I could do without starting to degrade the image. It took two separate adjustments with mask to get this much detail plus they are selectively sharpen so I am out of tricks if anyone has suggestions let me know.

As much as I like this image, I'm wishing for either more dof so I could more appreciate the wing stretch or eye contact. Also the wing looks sharper to me than the head, so I'd sharpen head just a bit more.

Really nice image and pose, Don. It's funny, I had a burrowing owl with dark eyes at cape coral in Florida last feb and wondered what that was about, whether it was a juvie thing that changes later. I should post one of my pics of that one for comparisons sake.

Hey Don, hope you don't mind me having a go at the eye's

I created a new layer making it an overlay layer filling it with 50% gray, sampled a medium brown area and started painting with a brush at about 7%, did a slight pass over that brown fill with white at 7%.

How fortunate to find a rare one. That's great . I agree about the rotaion and do like the repost of the eyes. Geez I really need to learn my PS more. I love the dof as it leaves a nice bg with just enough foreground grasses.
