Man, got lots of Purple Martin images to share...don't know which one to choose!! Anyways, I went to a local colony on three separate evenings last week, and got many more keepers than I would have expected. The 7D and 100-400L combo actually rocks way more than normally given credit for...

Canon 7D + 100-400L @320mm, manula exposure, evaluative metering, 1/2000s., f/6.3, ISO 800 (settings histogram checked), natural light, handheld, about 80% FF (cropped left and top, and added canvas at right and below).

    Daniel:

Not the easiest fellows to capture in flight, that is for sure. Unless I catch them close to the nest box, I find it really a challenge to focus accurately on them.

To my eye, the head isn't quite as sharp as the rump.

I like the comp, well exposed.

    Cheers

Definitely a tough subject Daniel! Excellent pose, but as pointed out above, sharpness of the head could be a little better. Looking forward to more of your images!

Hey Dan, not the slowest character to fly around, so very well done on getting him in the frame. Super flying posture, and Im amazed you still didnt freeze the wings at that ss. I like the hint of blue iridescence on his body.

    Hi Daniel,
I am always amazed to see shots of these super fast flyers. I am not skilled enough yet and feel a bit like a fraud for critiquing your image.
It looks like the critical focus was on the tail/bum as the head is a bit soft. I like the comp and the little bit of wing blur,
    Gail

    Thanks everyone!

Gail, I welcome critiques by everyone...and what you said is true and glad you came out and had the courage to point it out (as others did too). I had so much fun photographing these bullets and going through the raw files...this pose excited me and I failed to notice the critical focus was indeed on the rum/tail area rather than the face (the sort of detail I rarely miss out on while reviewing my images). No worries from me, excpet to say thank you and stay tuned for the next one!!
