I like the perch, and the light (although its' angle could have been better to avoid the shaadow on the face). I know it is not always possible, but a lower angle would have been really nice here. I wish the water disturbance at bottom wasn't there. The rest of the subtle streaking in the water looks good. Good job on the exposure, and I like the vertical comp.

Good points made by Daniel. Might take a bit off the top , but still feel this is a fine image.

Gail, the light angle creating the shadow on the bird's face is an image killer for me. As a result of it, the bird looks hunched over and kind of bored, and I am just not feeling the usual enjoyment that I get when I look at your work. Sorry!

Gail, I like how the yellow feet stand out from the water, and as Dan mentioned, good job on the whites. There is detail on the breast area.

I'm going to echo Daniel's comments on this image Gail. The shadow on the face and the turbulent water in the FG spoil this one for me.

Gail, good expsoure, low light angle and composition. Well done on those fronts. Yes to lower shooting angle suggestion.

The head angle does not go with light angle....is the issue. If the bird was pointing to your right, the face would have been nicely lit and shadow would not have been an issue. You'd have had to compose it differently though.

Head angle and light angle go hand-in-hand. We cannot always control the light angle as they land where they land and there might not be opportunity for us to move to the right spot(or there might be bad BG or something). But the good thing with egrets & herons is they give multiple head angles and usually stay in a head angle for sufficient duration. With patience and attention to the HA-light angle combo, your chance of nailing it is high. Something for next time.

Gail I really like the way the feet are wrapped around the rocks and the nice soft bg. You know the last time I rented a lens (300mm L) I had to have it... immmediately! If this were mine I'd be tempted to take a little off the top.
