Joel,
I like it, beautiful baby and a natural look to the setting. Assume this was a low light situation with the high ISO and slow shutter. Nice use of flash to bring out the image. Might lighten eye area some and perch is big but that is where the action was. Might take a layer off the bottom and remove the blurry branch running along side the bottom left hand corner - all subject stuff - but IMO make the pic stronger. Thanks, really like the setup you use, did you read this in a book or just experiment.

Hi Joel, very nicely captured with good detail, color, pose, background, and head angle. Excellent use of shallow DOF with the bird nicely parallel to the sensor plane. I don't think you need so much room on the left, and would just crop away that blurry branch in the LLC. The head area does seem dark and I agree with trying some lightening there. Nice job!

Joel - nice detail and tack sharp. Well done. Some good advice above.

Thanks Jeff,
I have done some reading on the internet, no books, but mostly just trial and error. My house sits on a 5 acre lot and about 4.5 acres is woods so I have a fairly diverse population of birds to work with as well as an endless supply of perches. The only downside is that it is nearly always shaded especially early and late in the day.
Joel, I love the colors in the bg as well as the nice detail in the towhee. It looks like you have a nice set-up - hopefully I can start working on one soon in my yard.![]()

Joel ...I like the shot....I suggest lightening the birds face
Agree with comments above. It is a very nice image. I would especially follow recomendations to crop the OOF branch on the bottom. I am wondering, is there a filter applied to the perch? The leaves appear to have a different look and the background is darker around the head and breast of the bird.
