Taken at local lake on an overcast morning a few days ago. Liked the BG and how the warm colors of the plant complimented the greens on the Anna's. Still working on getting a decent BIF of these guys. Crop, ACR, CS5, removed some branches and a few spots in BG, NR, sharpening.

Nice to see a perched hummingbird, and nice composition too. I do have to resist tilting my head to the left, so maybe you could consider a rotate to the right?

Nice perch and BG, I do agree that a rotation might make it even better.
    I like the head angle.

Hey Brendan, love the inquisitive pose, and what an interesting perch. Im amazed you managed to bring out the colours in the BG in overcast conditions. With a little more TLC in PS, I feel you can bring out the colours even more. I hope you dont mind, but I had another idea for the comp too. Here is my quick and easy version. With a larger file, you can do a better job.

Brendon, I like the composition and the BG. Very good IQ and exposure. Nice pose as well. Very well done.

I like the pose, perch and BG. When I first viewed the image I had a crop like Stuarts in mind.

Isnt he so pretty? Very nice image with great detail and perch. I like Stuarts idea for a different crop but I really like the top of the perch and think I'd want to keep it. Maybe just a little more off the bottom to change the vertical centering of the hummer? I like how Stuart put the bird to the left looking into the space though so that's a tough one.Still a great image as posted.

Thanks folks for your comments & suggestions, much appreciated.
Stuart, I do like your tighter crop as a solution, but really wanted to keep in that top part of the plant as part of the comp. I usually prefer tighter crops, but this was already a somewhat large crop. Cropping was kind of a puzzle for this one, trying to keep it from being too centered while keeping the upper part of the plant.

Here's another solution with a slight rotation, and a boost of saturation. Realize not ideal amount of space in front of hummer, but I'm ok with that for this comp.

    Default Large crop please!!

For what it's worth, I think the original large crop is drop-dead gorgeous. The composition and weighting—with the bird on the right—are strikingly artistic, worthy of the finest artists in the Orient or the west. I would have the original image on my living room wall in a millisecond—once I got over my jealousy, that is. Not so the closer-cropped image, which looks like an exquisite portrait of a... beautiful hummingbird. I'd admire it, but not put it on my wall as a work of art.
To bolster my view I would pose the question "What would John James Audubon do?" and the answer is: he'd paint the larger image. I rest my case. (Man, I am so jealous of this image...)

Brendan, I liked the original and I like the repost too. For my part you could probably rotate even further, but another idea, if you fancy it, could be to use photoshop to shorten the stem above the bird, bringing the top bloom closer. That might allow you to crop closer to Stuart's proportions but keep the top bloom.
