Also the portrait crop to see which folks prefer! With a bit of canvas added on top and dark patch removed.

Dumay - I prefer the wider comp giving the impala more room to gaze into. Very pleasing earth tones to this. Nice catchlight and the grass from the mouth is a bonus. Well done.

What a handsome boy, really like it. My preference in this case is for the vert crop, as you still have space around him but because of his pose it lends itself to a vertical. But, I would be happy with either and they would suit different purposes.

Hi Dumay, either format works well and it's a nice environmental/behavioural image, but I just find it a little flat in comparison to your normal postings. It looks like early in the morning with some good soft light, but I just feel it all merges if you know what I mean, perhaps a bit more punch, I don't know?:2

Perhaps we have become used to seeing punchy, vibrant images and when something like this is posted in lovely light our expectations drop a little. Don't get me wrong, it's a nice image I just think there is something lacking perhaps, but can I tell what it is, sadly not at the minute, perhaps others may, or I am trying to see too much.

This is the light! Lovely pose, details and light Dumay. I hear what Steve is saying, though often when adding that 'punch' it is easy to overdo it.

How about selectively darkening the BG ever so slightly, and then adding a hint of midtone contrast to the impala alone? Just thinking out loud here...

Either comp works for me too although I prefer the first for the rocks with the grass stalks. Regarding Steve's comment about it having a "merge", I see it as a result of the color of the BG rather than a lack of contrast on the animal but the animal stands out nicely to me regardless.
