On almost every trip to bring food to the hatchlings the adults also then carry a fecal sac out of the nest and drop it far away. Pretty neat behaviour, and cool that they are programmed to do such house cleaning. They normally shot right out of the hole like a bullet, making it difficult to get a proper image, but once in a while one would pause for a second or two beforwe jumping out. The sac was rather bright compared to the rest of the image...it was, um, interesting to work on at 100% magnification or more.

Canon 7D + 100-400L @400mm, manual exposure, evaluative metering, 1/1250s., f/6.3, ISO 400 (settings histogram checked), natural light, handheld, just about FF (slight crop top and left).

Agree with Arash, some more DOF would have been nice but still lovely as presented. My preference would be for the bird to be a little higher in frame so some more room down below would be my call but thats just a personal thing I think.

Well exposed all round Dan, with good sharp detail on the head and eye. The BG colours compliment the flycatcher nicely.

Yet another top-notch "fieldcraft portrait" from you, Daniel! And you keep coming up with new things to shoot. The flycatcher is a little dark, but if you'd exposed the image any more then the fecal sac would have been glaring. Daniel, there's a question just crying out from this image that you didn't answer in your intro: How did you get that nearly straight-on angle?

Thanks Craig, I'm glad you appreciate the subject matter! The slight darkness may be attributed to the fact this is taken during the first minutes of daylight (see the sun just rising above the horizon in the eye reflection).

As for the staright-on angle, see this thread for the description

    http://www.birdphotographers.net/for...to-a-Butterfly.

In short, the hole is only about 7 1/2 feet off the ground, so I brought a chair to stand on and bingo, eye-to-eye!!
