    Default Pileated Woodpecker

I was printing out some images today and I thought that I might share
a few that I really like.
Taken in the early morning light.
The dead tree was located in a swampy area and I could shoot only from the boardwalk.
I chose the best possible spot.
The male is excavating a nest hole.
    Thanks for looking.

Karl, nice light angle. Very impressive head sharpness at that SS. I also like the blur in the flying wood chips. BG behind the bird being even helps a lot. You positioned yourself very well. Exposure looks on the money to me.

One suggestion is a little more room at the top if you have it in orig.

Ditto to everything Kaustubh had to say. What amazing action/behavior you captured here. I really think you did well considering the angle you were obviously working with. You have nice details and the motion blur in the wood chips really helps to tell the story!

Very nice shot indeed. Sharp at that SS, plus, this is so different than most shots.

Well exposed Karl, and Im amazed how sharp the head is for your relatively slow ss, and Im sure the head was moving pretty quickly. Great colours in the BG. The flying bark puts this over the top.

    Karl,

Wonderful image, but I am not sure about the crop choice.

Great sharp detail and IQ. Like the behavior captured. Subject is well exposed with good natural colours against a killer bg. Well done !

I think Kaus covered your image about right. Yes, more room at the top; otherwise, I like your crop, because who wants to look at more tree trunk? Yes, the exposure is good. The best would be a more straight-on shot, but you made the most of that situation. I like the flying wood, and the blur is appropriate. The head is sharp because the woodpecker held it still for a millisecond.
