Default Loon Chick ~ Green Water and Bubbles

    Attached Images Attached Images

I spent two hours in early light on Tuesday attempting to get some loon chick images without the parents that I was happy with.

Just started going through them and this one kinda caught my eye due to the color, pose and the patterns in the water. The chick was close to shore and there were little ripples bouncing back both off the shoreline rocks and the kayak.

I tried several different crops but this pano seems to work best for my eyes at least.

Note...the bubbles in the original were really blue and I toned them down a bit.

+1 on the bubbles. Water on the baby adds to the image too.

I agree on the pano crop. The profiles of loons show length more than anything else. Unless it is coming slightly towards you there is nothing else to do.

Jim, excellent sharpness and exposure. Bubbles do make it interesting. You also got interesting pattern in the water with that shutter speed. Well done as always.

    Jim:

Nicely done. At this age the chicks aren't quite so cute, but the bubbles def. add in some fun factor here.

Nice lighting, sharp, nicely exposed. Good job at that shutter speed, from a kayak. I have enough issues at that shutter speed in my boat

It is interesting that the bubbles to my eye act like tiny "bubble levels" and make me think the image needs a bit of CCW rotation, even though the loon looks OK. I thought at first that the bubble where just tipped by a wave, but they all are tipping down to the right.

Hope to get some more chick shots soon, so keep posting, it keeps me fired up to make the long drive up north.

    Cheers

I am guessing that the angle of the bubbles is due to the fact that the chick just bobbed up and the water is moving away from it?

Two frames later they were level.

Very nice. The chick is great, and the bubbles do add something. I wonder what caused them?

Very cute image and the bubbles add a unique dimension to it. I think your theory is probably correct. I'd prefer to see the chick a bit darker...kinda like this:
