    Default Hovering Puffin

I have been a little quiet recently trying to settle back in to reality after my trip. Been busy spending a great deal of time staring at my Puffin shots from my Farne Island trip. I have found a few prize keepers and especially like this one.

I was unable to include much grass when I took this (400mm on 7D is a little tight for some shots) so I contemplated cloning it out but after a few hmmms I decided the green adds a lot to the image so I expanded the canvas slightly.

    Techs: Canon 7D, 400mm F5.6, F5.6, 1/800, ISO800, exp comp +1 2/3

    C&C appreciated.

    Thanks

    Jamie

Man I love these birds. Lovely exp and like the wing position. I would like to see a slightly better HA but a very nice image indeed. I hope to get to see one of these one day.

Great in flight captured! Exposure very well handled and the green piece adds to the background.

I like the motion blur at the tips of the wings as well. Very well done!

Glad you left the grass in as I think it gives the image a base. Very fine capture all around.

Jamie, Dumay about sums up what I absorbed from your puffin. Nicely done; I like your hint of wing blur, and the grass provides context and orientation. I'd like some more involvement from the puffin.

Great sharp detail and IQ. Like the in flight pose and comp. Subject is well exposed with good natural colours against a killer bg. Well done !

I like the side elevation of the Puffin coming into land with the wings swept back and feet out on this one Jamie, however, personally I feel all the colour & depth is just washed out, leaving shapes of colour. Perhaps the +1 2/3 might have been a little too much and in dropping the exposure the whites would have had more detail, allowing you to retrieve some more out of the shadow areas later in PS? I know light may not always be your best friend there, but I do feel it's a little light overall sadly for me.

BTW Was this taken as you come over the brow of the hill after landing, past the steps?

I respect your critique Steve and I went and increased the Gamma Correction in PS which increased the depth of colour. I like the washed out look of this but appreciate it might lack real depth. Here is another version.

I Should be outside enjoying the nice day but I had gum work done this morning and have a bloody sore mouth and was told I couldnt take my mtn bike out which sucks.

This was taken just to the right of the lighthouse building. The Puffins were coming in to land from our left.

    Cheers Jamie.

I think you could drop the exposure too, just for the whites, but sadly if the detail isn't there in the original you haven't too much to work/play with.

Suuny, blustery with occasional showers over here, 8.5 hours waiting for the Little owls with nothing to show, think they had more sense, or were off feed very early this morning.

Good luck with the bears, although you have the same issues as I have on my patch, with unwelcome people!!! Hope the mouth gets better soon.

Jamie I meant to say, your image has no profile so you might like to look at how you save your files for web.

    This might help.
