Default Tree Swallow in Flight: taken w/ 70-200 & 2x TCIII

I recently decided to try a 2x TCIII w/ my 70-200 f/2.8 VRII (Nikon) as a compromise "travel lens". Initial tests seemed quite good.
So I decided to go for a challenge...swallows in flight.

    D3, 70-200VRII + 2x TCIII, @ 1/1500, ISO 640 (auto), 150mm (yeah, I know), spot meter/ spot focus (dynamic 51pt).
Image is approx. 25% of original. (I just couldn't keep them in the frame)

I took about 25 images with about 50% in focus and 5-6 "keepers". All in all, not bad IMO. I've never done any better with Swallows in flight (or any passerines for that matter). I still feel 400mm is a bit short on a FF.

nice but it doesn't quite work IMHO due to poor IQ.

Sharp and nice pose. I would try to open up the dark areas.

Agree with the above. Trying pulling back the contrast and bringing out the shadows a little.
Good work getting them in frame...they are tough. Looks fairly sharp too from what I can see :)

Looks sharp however IQ suffered from the massive crop in here.

Good suggestions given above, agree about big crop...but bird's pose really is nice...

Here it is opened up a bit. Of course it would have been better if I could have gotten them at a longer FL and didn't need the crop, but at the working distance of about 20ft I just couldn't keep them in frame. BTW, the crop is harder than first noted, more like 1/5th of the original...

Because I was only at 150mm and f/8 (TC adjusted numbers) I would have to assume the quality would have been better without the TC in the first place. But the point was to see if the 70-200 w/ 2x could keep up with BIF or if I needed to invest in another lens. I would say the combo did quite well given the subject.

But it does beg the question...How do you capture passerines in flight at high resolution? About the only thing I can come up with is using triggers or similar and a fixed focus zone. For that one would need a reliable flight path and I just don't have that.
I've seen some amazing shots here and I'm curious as to how it's done.
