On a tip from a friend, I learned of a place 1.5 hour drive from my home, where people were seeing and photographing Least Bitterns.
We left for Montreal at 4:30am, hoping to get there for the early light.
Unfortunately the bitterns weren't very obliging but later in the day, We finally spotted one and this was the result...
We were on a boardwalk but I did try to get as low as I could..
Light was harsh, and I wish that reed wasn't there (I'll probably clone it out when I have more time) but this is one tough bird to get in the open, so I'll take it

Nice exposure and pose from the bittern. Setting is a bit busy, but it does show the environment, and you have to take what you can on these shy birds.
Hey Paul,
Your assesment on the BG is correct and I do think worth the trouble.....as you said....shy fellows! I think a bit of clean up will go a long way......a bit better HA towards us.....would have really put this up yet another notch. Congrats on the capture still!
The image below is what will go into my library for now...just for your info...date and place, signify first time I saw this species......ya gotta love listers
Paul, we call these guys Little Bitterns, and they certainly are shy. Always perched in thick reeds. The enviroment is a bit busy, but thats where they live. Your clean up in the repost puts this up a few notches. Well done.
