Default White Ibis. low angle shot

    Attached Images Attached Images

40D. 400 f5.6L at f/6.3. iso 320. 1/2000s. manual metering. added some canvas on top and left. Ibis is a like a mini project right now for me as I am getting some good opportunities close to home.

I am not too happy with the dark patch in the BG. can't help it. Water level is dropping rapidly in this heat...exposing wet mud patches. All critiques welcome.

    Kaustubh:

These guys always make me smile. Nice shooting angle, agree about the dark patch, but your low angle helped throw it out of focus nicely.

The wet feathers have really good texture, nice head angle.

I wish the DOF extended to the end of the bill. You had enough light to trade ISO and shutter speed for a little more DOF, and still keep the background well blurred I would think.

One trick I have started doing on my loons is for fairly static shots where you have time, I will take a series of shots with the focus point progressively moved about to look for the best overall disturbution of DOF. Obviously the eye needs to be sharp, but I will sometimes focus behind the eye slightly, or a bit forward of the eye to get the best location for my in focus plane.

    Cheers

Randy, thx for the suggestions. This is the first time I am shooting Ibises. Still havent figured out their behavior traits. They come across as busy characters and always seem to be walking fast in the water and changing directions...unlike the other herons/egrets I am used to :-) Ibis, although it breeds here, is not very common and not easy to get close to.

I didn't stop down further as the habitat is quite ugly. Here I got a bit lucky as he walked into a clean water with some good separation.

Excellent shot Kaustubh! Low angle and a good exposure really make this one work. I might consider lightening the dark area in below the head and bill a bit, but it also works very well as is.

Interestingly enough Kaustubh.....I don't mind the dark patch! Great low angle and the sharpness looks pretty good on this end although another round of USM should do the trick. Very nicely done!

Good exposure on the whites, which show up nice detail. I like angle of the Ibis, and would maybe add a touch more below to allow for more of the virtual legs.

Great sharp detail and IQ. Like the low angle. Subject is well exposed with good natural colours against a good DOF. Well done !
