Julie, the white eyering and white under the eye patch are usually good field marks for Vesper Sparrow,
if it was lighter you'd probably see white outer tail feathers.
What really is a key identifier and usually not seen is the chestnut colored lesser coverts, I lightened up your image, take a look at the shoulder you'll see the chestnut color.

OK, now I see them. That will be a helpful field mark to look for. I was confused by the U-shaped white area. Thanks Paul!
