This Red-Winged-Black Bird saw a large black bird in its territory and made a straight line dash for the big bird and harassed it until it left his area. In this view, the birds did a sharp bank near me, displaying their undersides, so the only red on the red-winged-black bird is at the wing tip. Love those Colorado deep blue skies. Early morning image.

Canon 1D Mark IV, 300 mm f/2.8 L IS lens at f/4.5, ISO 200, 1/2500 second, manual exposure. Single point autofocus AI servo tracking, hand held. Crop to 10 megapixels. Phase angle about 20 degrees.

Anyone know exactly what the large black bird is?

What I find amazing about this pic is the near identical " postures" of these two birds. The Red Wing BBs can be quite feisty! Also good detail in the dark feathers. I think this is a great image.

Super exp and detail on the birds. really like the poses of both as mentioned before, almost identical. Not a big fan of the very blue sky, but thats personal taste. Nice one Roger

I agree with all comments above..... excellent blacks and details.

I also like that they both seem to have their landing gear tucked in

Hi Roger, good action captured here, and I like the similar flight postures. Both sharp showing good underwing detail. There is a hint of a magenta cast to the Raven, which Im sure if you agree, will sort out in a jiffy.

Very very nice shot. I think this is a crow or a raven? The blacks are beautifully exposed. A keeper for sure.

    Hi Gail,
Yeah, crow or raven. I'm leaning toward crow as a raven would be larger, and in other views the tail feathers look like the references on the web for crows. But if someone sees something definitive, I would like to know what it is.

    Stuart,
Yes, I see the crow/raven is slightly reddish. Typical RGBs have G=B, and R slightly higher. But the red-winged-black bird has a blue body B>G>R. Reducing the red makes the sky too blue, so I think this is about right. The sun was very low in the sky.

    Thanks all for the comments.

Hi Roger, Great light and nice postures by these two mischief mongers.
I've visited Colorado only twice - incidentally this time of the year - and the deep blue skies are indeed memorable. The maroon bells look gorgeous with light and skies like this.
    How does the AF on 1d Mk 4 + 300 2.8 compare with that of 1d Mk4 + 500 f/4 in your experience?

    Thanks Sidharth,
I do have both lenses and AF performance on both is impressive. But I think the 300 f/2.8 is faster, probably because it is f/2.8. Canon uses it as their standard for reporting AF performance, so it may be their fastest AF.
