    Default On the Prowl

Another image I revisited since upgrading to CS5. Taken in the Timbavati Game Reserve, South Africa in August 2009. He had just caught the scent of a nearby leopard (according to our guide) and was leaving the pride to investigate. The leopard was also on the move and although we saw both on that game drive, there was no interaction between the two.

    C&C welcome and appreciated. Thanks,

Hi Rachel, there is a nice contrast here for me between the reddish colour of the lion and the bg. He also looks very sharp, and your techs look good, enough dof from whiskers to his head. Exp looks good as does the PP work to me. Seeing as there is no eye contact in this one, I wouldn't have minded a little more of the lions muscular shoulder in the frame.

Hi Rachel! It's always tough getting the framing just right in dense bush like the Sabi Sands

I too wish for a tad more lion as Grant mentioned. The colour looks to be a bit too "red" and the image could do with some backing down on that channel IMHO. I am noticing some strange artifacts on the BG foliage? :2

Nice textures. Maybe if the Lion was about 3 -4 feet back then we could have seen the pupil better. I like the intent look, but also see the artifacts in the BG. Some selective NR would work well there. Tough place to shoot sometimes with the density of the bush. The colors on the lion are a little off. A touch too orange/red. I enjoy CS5 and you will end up loving it too.

    Hi Rachel

I tried a very quick fix here, hope you don't mind.
Using Robert A's luminosity mask @ 75 to make it pop a bit more and selectively used Gaussain blur of 1.3 on BG and took out the red/orange cast in colour balance. (could use a touch more, depending on preference)

Let me know what you think?

    Cheers
    Marc

Thanks for the comments and for the repost Marc. I revised my color settings in both DPP and CS5 with Steve's help so hopefully this has resolved some of the issues I've been having. Not sure about the artifacts other than if it's due to compression, I had to save at less than 50 quality. Here's another go with more of the shoulder visible too. Please let me know if it works.

    Thanks again,
    Rachel

Hi Rachel, I think your OP is probably the best version, sadly Marcs IMHO is going towards a hint of yellow/green and your repost I feel does not hit the mark, as both Marc & yours now contain a green/emerald cast along the mane.

Going back to your OP, go into Adjustments, Saturation and adjust both the Red & Yellow channel say -10 & +5, then apply a mask and apply to the Lion just to take it down a bit, but it does bring in this emerald colour? In Curves just drop the Output figure to say 10 to? I do think the whole image is just a tad too sharp and you should just apply any sharpening to the Lions head only.

Saying that I do like the comp.

Still feel there is a colour issue overall at the front end of your processing:2:2:2

    cheers

I didn't make it any easier by posting the wrong conversion, your correct Steve my one had to much of a green cast, but I notice what has changed now is that you cannot go back (in edit) and change the image posted only the wording :2:2.
    Is this correct?

Hi Marc, I have only ever thought you could only edit text not the image as well. If you want to email it to me I might be able to alter it for you.
