Didn't have alot of time today, but these guys came over a ridge and gave me a second to snap this. The shot is full frame and is tight on the bottom with a distracting OOF rock. I wish I had composed it with more off centered, but this is what presented itself for a brief moment so I will take what I got. I could crop from the side more but it would be more of a square crop and I usually don't care for the square crop.

Nice capture here Tom, depicting the rocky environment and showing the close bond between the two.
As mentioned, the OOF rock is distracting but understand the circumstances.
We saw a few grizzlies hunting these guys whilst cruising the Inside Passage, amazing but albeit at a lot further distance.

Tom - agree with your self-critique and also about the slight blue cast. Still like the habitat depicted and the youngster is a cutie.

It's better but on my calibrated monitor there's still a hint of blue in the shadows on the head of the adult.

Hi Tom, I think the first looks a lille flat, but the second has a hint too much red, noticeable in the FG rocks. I think a slight tweak with the OP and a hint more sharpening on the Goats only, will get to where you need to be.

I think you will understand my thinking, I hope.

Like the setting and totally agree about the FG

    Hi Tom
Its a pity you have an aversion to the square crop as it think it is along with 4x5 one of the best aspect ratio in photography..

I think this crop gets rid of most of the FKG distraction

These are some nice, clean looking goats Tom. Heard talk of some lambs when I was up there last week but only saw three goats and got driven off the mountain by darkness and snow. I like the position of the two being so close to each other. Nice details in the fur and the colors look pretty good to me in the OP.

Ditto on the positive comments above, and I like the strong diagonal line created where sky meets ground.

I love these guys - the repost is better but I think Steve's suggestions will further improve this one.

Interesting comment about the square crop, Peter...Personally I can go to 4x5 but tend to stay away from overly square crops. Why do you think it works so well?

Tom I know you are there on what you need to do regarding the image and trust you prefer the slight cleaner feel to the image now, I hope this may swing it, as I think young Peter has a valid point re crop too.

Be great to see your version Tom, as you now have mastered the hard part of tweaking the image.

    cheers

Everyone, thank you for the comments. Steve, the repost coloration looks much better. I agree the WB adjustment that I did, added too much red in the rocks. As for the square crop, it improves this image by minimizing the OOF rock in the FG. I wish I had gotten a bit higher, it would have made the goats feet better and minimized the distraction - still learning lots!

Even tho this image looks better with the square crop, it usually doesn't appeal to me as much as a traditional aspect ratio - salt to taste, right?

Thanks to each of you for your comments and taking the time to share with me. I do appreciate it very much.

Beautiful capture Tom! Love the details on the goats without any harsh shadow, great job on that! Sweet to see the nanny with kid together.
