Default Amazing Start to my Norway Trip

    Attached Images Attached Images

I created this Red-throated Loon (Red-throated Diver here in Europe) image in Svalbard, Norway with the Canon 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II lens, the Canon EF 1.4X III TC (hand held at 280mm), and the Canon EOS-1D Mark IV. ISO 400. Evaluative metering at zero: 1/800 sec. at f/4 in Manual mode.

Lens/TC/camera body Micro-adjustment: +1. (After I had this Mark IV repaired and adjusted the micro-adjustment dropped from +5 to +1 with the TC in place; it is important to micro-adjust once a month.)

This was the first bird that we photographed on our first day. What followed turned out to be probably the greatest day of photography in my 28 year career. The day included Ivory Gull, King Eider, Parasitic Jaeger, Svalbard Reindeer, dozens of tame Common Eiders nesting and courting, and lots more. Love the sharpness, the exposure, the hint of environment, the head turn pose with open beak. I really like the OOF blue foreground of the water in this image, which is nice against the brown and gray background.

Congrats on this shot Artie, and to the best day of photography in many years as well

You captured a wonderful image here, the Red throat shows very nicely and the gray on the head must of made the metering rather easy for the camera Wonder if you could pop the eye just a tad more in this one. love the open beak and how did you get so low, were you on a vessel? great perspective, my eye seems to want just a tad more room on the left in order to see the entire nest. Great job with this setup, your making me want the new 70-200 now:eek: Wow what a nice bkg too.

Cool looking bird and a very nice shot. Like the open bill and the wider crop. Gives it a nice feel for the environment. As expected spot on. Enjoy the rest of your trip and looking forward to seeing more.

Beautiful shot Artie. I might agree with a tighter crop to show off this species that many of us will never see. The open beak is nice but I'd like a little more head turn towards the viewer. Any views of the Northern Lights ?

Just love the soft light in this, low perspective, and the overall sharpness. Well timed to get the open beak, and thats a neat looking Loon with all it multi colours. I would maybe take a bit off the bottom.

Artie, low angle makes all the difference. excellent view of the environment. the wider fov has helped a lot. I am fine with the wider crop but my personal preference would be to have the bird lower in the frame.

WOW! What an amazing looking bird. I love the inclusion of the environment. I really like the velvet feel to this image. The grey neck looks like satin.
The techs are perfect (of course) but it is the overall feel of this picture that makes it for me.

Artie, this shot is mesmerizing; I think it's the satiny look, almost feel, of the face, plus the whole Arctickness of the image. The mysterious, grand North, and all that. The loon seems just a bit cocked away from you; I'm wondering whether you couldn't have slid over to the right and shot the loon more head-on. (You'd have captured more of the red throat, too.)

Thanks all for your kind words. I will try to answer most of the questions here. I was on my belly in wet mud and rocks. On a point of land that was closest to the nest. Craig, I had already made many images with the big lens from right of where I was with the short lens.... I did think about cropping some more off the bottom..... Herb, no Northern Lights in the summer; it is much too warm. Chad, the top half of the eye was very light, probably from the reflected sky. I darkened it a bit but went easy as it does not take much to overdo it and wind up with a phony look.

Lorant, thanks especially for your comments on my blog.
