    Default Sizing For Printing

    Having never considered printing anything larger than A4 (219 x 297 mm - 8.3 x 11.7 in)

I want to print the image I posted http://www.birdphotographers.net/for...rs-New-Zealand large size.

I contacted a professional printer and was advised that he prints in the 2:3 format, e.g., 8x12, 12x16, etc.

    The image is currently 5322 x 3207 pixels/22.175 x 13.363 inches.

Am I learning for the first time that if you do not crop to the 2:3 format then you cannot print in the 2:3 format?

I played with image sizing in CS5 and to try to force a 2:3 format distorts the image.

Short of owning my own printer; cost prohibitive and there is no space for a printer this size in our caravan, what are my options?

Is the only option to find a printer that will print to my dimensions and then trim the edges?

    Hopefully, an interesting discussion.
    Cheers, Jay

The print size you indicated assumes printing at 240 ppi. You can print at other resolutions, such as 360 ppi, as you wish. The current aspect ratio is about 5:3. Any competent printer can print this for you as a full frame image at your current aspect ratio to whatever reasonable size you want on larger paper and trim it, if that is what you want. Cropping to 2:3 is not necessary for printing unless you specifically want a print at that aspect ratio.

    Hello Jay

I would think that you can use this printer but you will have a little paper with no image on it at the top and the bottom as the 5:3 image is slightly wider and not as tall as a 3/2 image. So specify the 3/2 print size that's closest to what you want in width, then crop off the unused paper top and bottom if required. This way you dont loose any of your composition (althought you waste a little paper...), but if you use a matte then you probably dont need to trim the edges either...

Jay- As a general rule you need at least 1-1.5" / 2.5-3.5 cm of paper under the matte just to keep everything solid. Therefore, white space around the image is necessary so just work around what your printer is requiring if you must stay with him/her, and trim as necessary.

    Jay,

Just tell the printer you want a full sized uncropped image printed within the boundaries of the larger paper. Thereafter, you can cut, mat as you deem appropriate.
