This image reached the finals on Wildlife Photographer of the Year 2011 (Veolia, BBC) but looks like it never went any further...
I was asked to send the RAW and TIF ready for printing and was hoping to hear from them a few days ago but nothing...I guess I will have to try harder next year....

    Very slight crop for composition

Standing in the water gave you a great perspective, and very well timed to capture the moment. I like the show of the wings, together with the overall sharpness and flying droplets. We never know what the judges will choose.

Olfer that is a fantastic image, my only nit would be to do away with the double catch light, yes, a personal preference, I run into this all the time shooting early AM or late evening on the lake or pond, I don't always fix this myself but feel this image is well worth especially if you go to print.

PS you may have left the catch light because of the competition you entered

Regardless of what Wild Photographer of the Year thinks, this is a stunning image.

Another amazing capture of this behaviour Ofer...is this from the same sequence you posted earlier, or a recrop of the same frame?

Congrats on reaching the WPOTY finals with this - are you absolutely sure you won't hear from them still?

Beautiful capture Ofer, love the clean face and eyes with splash all around, and a great BG to boot.

Ofer, this is brilliant. Maybe the BBC officials are running late with their notifications but whatever, reaching the finals is great and this image would have been a worthy winner. It really has been the most interesting series of images.

Thanks for your comments and kind words guys!
Morkel, it is possible that I have already posted this in here. As to WPOTY - they said mid-June so I guess it is not going to happen this year...
I am disappointed but already feel the urge to go and get a better one.... will have to wait till January though as it has to be very hot in order for the FFs to drink in day time.

Only thing I can see that the judges might nit-pick on, maybe, perhaps, is the bat's left wing is not opened out like the other one and it is a tiny bit low in the water (needs to be 1 inch higher) ??? But hey, what do I know about bats or judging

    Lovely image Ofer!

Congratulations on reaching the finals. May be you will hear by end of June? Even if you don't, then better luck next time.

I would prefer the double catchlight. It is perfectly natural to get multiple reflections in the eye in such situations. Thanks for sharing.

    Cheers,

What an awesome image this is, would sure have loved to see this image as the WPOTY! The water splash & the low angle make this a winner!!
