    Default Ring necked pheasant portrait

    Attached Images Attached Images

    Canon 1d Mark IV, 300 f2.8 L IS

    1/1000, f7.1, iso 1000, Flash E-TTL -1 1/2.
    Almost full frame.

As I'm posting it, it feels like it could use a little more room above, but I'm not sure.
I somewhat wish the green in the LRC wasn't there.

    Feedback much appreciated.
    Thanks

This is a great looking bird. Great flash work and it shows the iridescent colors perfectly. Amazing IQ and BG..Lovely stuff!

This is a great shot! These birds used to be plentiful in SW Michigan. But it is now a rarity that you see one. Enjoyed this shot it reminds me of growing up and hearing their calls. TFS.

Nice potrait indeed. Would tone down the reds a bit. How do you like this vertical crop?

Thanks Arash, yes, this was from PA. I ended up finding a family of three there.

Thank Dumay, Gary - this was a lifer for me. Never seen one in Austin. The call is indeed unmistakably comical :)

Ofer, thanks for the repost. I like your crop a lot.
Re. the reds - There were a few pixels with R in the 250s. I toned it down by adding cyan selectively on the face. Any tips on how to reduce reds are welcome.
Btw, for some reasons, the reds in your repost look a bit brighter than in the OP on all my monitors.
    Thanks again.

Sidharth, before seeing Ofer's comment, I thought of a vertical too. Amazing colours throughout, and I do like the iridescence around the head and neck. You sorted the BG nicely too. With regards to sorting out reds, you are correct in applying a touch of cyan. Another way is simply selecting the reds, and desaturating them between 7-12 points.

Sharp. I am fine with the original COMP and with the REDs there as well. A bit more on the top would work. Love the head angle and the feather detail.

Hi Sidharth, the reason colours look different in my repost is because I saved it as sRGB instead of ADOBE RGB 1998 which is the colour space in which your original was saved. I am not sure why but many people don't convert their images to sRGB when poting which results in flat colours.

Ofer. I use Save For Web with "Convert to sRGB" checked.
I need to read up on this stuff anyway to understand the differences.
Thanks for pointing it out - I will revisit my workflow, and I might just PM you if I have questions ;)
    Very nice avatar, btw.

Just in case anybody cares ...

I couldn't explain earlier why colors shifted so much when Ofer converted untagged files (such as my OP).
After all, if I open the OP in PS and embed sRGB in it and then save it, it looks *exactly* the same as my OP.

I experimented with this a bit and I think the reason is the "default" color space in PS that one has set up.
My default is sRGB. When I opened the OP in my PS, it looked exactly as posted.
I bet Ofer's default PS color space is ADOBE RGB 1998. His PS thus assumed RGB for the OP.
This creates a significant color shift. Later this file was converted to sRGB which probably added a bit more shift.

I have now changed my default color space to RGB and have turned on an option to warn me if I open a file if the profile is missing.

Thanks Ofer for catching my untagged image. This was a fun, eye-opening experiment.
