    Default Snuck Out...

Client-friend Clemens van der Werf came to my house so that we could so some Lens Aligning on Monday morning but swamped as I was (and am--getting ready to fly to arctic Norway on Saturday morning), we could not resist the urge to head down to the lake for an hour of photography.

This Sandhill Crane colt was photographed with the Canon 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II, the 2X III TC, and the EOS-1D Mark IV (hand held at 285mm). ISO 400. Evaluative metering +2/3 stop: 1/500 sec. at f/8 in Manual mode.

Don't be shy; all comments welcome.

Artie, excellent composition, pose, BG. no intersecting line behind the head...nice. I am little surprised you left so little room at the bottom though.

What strikes me most about this picture is how well the colors are work together. I think the bottom space looks fine. Agree that BG works b/c there are no intersections with the head. That colt is really glowing and I like it's pose.

I always make excuses to go out and photograph my favorite subject!

I like it Arty, I agree with Marina that colors really compliment the bird

Here's a version with a bit more room below for KD. Somewhere in between is probably best :).

Artie, good walking pose, and I the overall exposure, colours and sharpness. The angle of capture looks good, and I too, like the added space at the bottom. Did you shoot this vertical?

OK-so I am going to be the person to rain on your parade Artie!!Whenever I see a thumbnail of one of your pictures and click to open it, I get a lovely feeling of anticipation-kind of like Pavlov's dog!!
But when I opened the image I felt ...nothing. Technically, the picture is perfect but I find it doesn't grab me. I keep trying to pinpoint why I wouldn't hang it on my wall and I think it is the environment ( not like Bosque) and the fact that the bird is looking straight ahead, as though ignoring you. I know you are the master and I the beginner so feel free to debate this with me!!

    Hi Artie,

Lovely shot of this juvi. Great HA, excellent light and nice pose. I like the habitat included, but don't think the BG line intersecting with the birds neck works for me. If I recall correctly this has always been a rule for you as well: 'don't let a possible BG line intersect with a birds head, neck or body' below the ankles or above the head is ok, right? Absolutely not meant as a stab in the back, but just curious as to how you feel about this issue regarding this shot.

You're almost on your way to Spitsbergen right? Hope you have a blast out there, and whish you a safe trip!

    Cheers,

    Krijn

Only I can rain on my parade. And things are fantastic here: I am breathing--it does not get any better than that.

For the record, I would not hang this on my wall either. I do have a similar film image that rocks; it is the best image that I have never published anywhere...

Don't get me wrong, however, this image can sell :).

Nice find Artie, and all you do is sneak out to find this?

I do have one comment to make because I'm not really too shy
I would of like to see you knock that aperture down to 5.6 or so to separate the subject some more

Nice job with the new 2x on that new 70 ta 200

Can you post a 100% crop for me?

    Thanks Chad

Nice and simple. Cropped a bit off the top as I feel there is a bit too much of the sky which doesn't help the image IMO.

Colors are lovely; walking pose and HA look good. I like the room at the bottom, and Ofer's crop off the top. Personally I don't mind the grass line crossing the neck in this case -- at least the whole head is nicely framed by the lake.

I like Ofer's crop too. I was struggling with how much sky to include....

Yup. I had been neglecting the baby cranes for months with all of my extensive travels. Here is a 100% crop. Will post another one in the next pane.

Thanks for the crop shots Artie, not too shabby with that 2x on, good feather detail and the eye looks pretty darn nice, did you see my Indigo with the 2x and 500mm? you got me trying this combo again, it has been a long time since I used my 2x, needless to say I was very impressed when used with a tripod and adjusting the aperture to f10 or higher.

    Thanks again for the crops.
    Chad
