    Hi Folks,

First post here in the with the "Big Guys", I usually live in the ETL, thought I'd dip a toe in the water and see how it feels. This was taken last Nov, Estero Beach FL just after sunrise.

    ISO 400, F5.6, 1/2000, 500 + 1.4, 1Dmk4, tripod mounted, 40% taken away.

Minor adjusts in ACR. Hope it's good enough for the Avian

Lovely low angle and complimentary colors.Good light as well. I feel the IQ is lacking a touch. Lacking the detail you would usually get from the combo you are using. SS looks fine so the only thing I can think of is either in the crop or PP detail was lost...A lovely looking image maybe a touch more TLC needed....Nice one Chris

Beautiful BG and color compliment this subject. The low angle works well here and the composition is sweet. Nice light as well.

Lovely image indeed! However, I agree with Dumay regarding IQ.

Yeah, first day at school and I screw up, back to ETL methinks. My only excuse is when I first tried to upload one of the parameters was too large so I just cropped to correct size and posted, basic error-- sorry. So here's a repost, I've gone from tiff, save to web with Bicubic sharper and around of USM 75, 0.3 and threshold of zero. I do hope this works. Thanks for for comments

    Regards CB

Image aside, did you do anything to the BKGR at any time? I am seeing a light glow around the bird.... If you see it please check your RAW file and let me know if it is there too or not.... Got your e-mail and will get back to you asap. ETL is for beginners; you are no beginner; this is basically a fine image.

Repost looks MUCH better IQ-wise. Shows the importance of careful resizing for web. I like the image overall, great low angle and nice comp. Wondering about that "glow" too. With a photo like this I think you belong here!

Thank you for your kind comments, I've done nothing to the background. I used Neat Image for sharpening the Tiff, downsized using bicubic sharper and finally USM to finish. Maybe too much at the Neat image stage. I've took an untouched tiff from the raw (virgin), cropped to almost the same size as my original and attached it unsharpened for your perusal. Thanks for your time

Chris, YAW. The unsharpened image in Pane 9 lots mighty fine and plenty sharp. And the IQ in the repost in Pane 6 is much better than the original. Here's a tip to see if we have over-processed an image: view the original (Pane 9) and then the processed image (Pane 6) in slideshow mode if you can--Breezebrowser is great for that. Much of the time even though I have seemingly not done a lot to brightness, tonality, saturation, and contrast, I will often want to go back and get my image to look more like the original.... Let me know what you think when you do that here.

As for the glow, it is there faintly in the original and was likely just more evident in the processed images (as a result of lightening the image). While I like the SH, the pose, the bird angled slightly toward us, the perfect head angle and EXP, the shoreline cutting the bird were it does bugs me. Sometimes taking the lens off the tripod or ground pod and getting as low as possible (that may include digging a hole in the sand or the mud to get low, low) is the way to go.

Repost in Pan#6 is great! I don't mind the glow at all - it is actually a very pleasing effect IMO.

Here we go then, another repost. Minor adjusts to, with curves, +2 on neutrals with Sel Colours, BGD n/r in lab channel and a tad increase in sat. bird sel sharp at 8% strength. Slightly different crop as my original was too large on Vertical. I think I prefer my first attempt (pane 6) but maybe somewhere between the 2 for me. I couldn't see the glow in any of them but I do need a new pair of glasses - honest! Shoreline cutting Bird noted, not sure about shovels with the airlines an US Immigration!! Thanks all again for your comments, especially those who commented on the poor IQ, I've got a lot from this posting- Thanks CB

I like the color in the image above but prefer the lighter tonality of the image in pane 9.

What lens? What tripod? What head? How did you get low on the tripod?

OK. Here you go. At times, when I want to get lower, to--for example--move the horizon line off the bird--I will simply take the lens off the tripod and place the foot on the ground or, to go even lower, rotate and put the barrel on the ground.... No shovel needed. What the big secret to making great nature photographs? There is none, just lots of attention to small details....
