    Default More Love for White-rumpeds

    Attached Images Attached Images

This fading, molting adult White-rumped Sandpiper was photographed on AUG 29, 2007 at Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge in Queens, NY with the Canon 600mm f/4L IS lens, the 2X II TC, and the EOS-1D MIII. ISO 500. Evaluative metering +2/3 stop: 1/400 sec. at f/11.

Note as always the orange base of the lower mandible and the wings extending past the tail. Fading molting adults have a grey-hooded look and a prominent whitish eyeline. The streaks and chevrons on the flanks are also indicative of this species.

Come on Dan, we wanna see that juvie. Please include the date--likely OCT something.

Posted one yesterday right here Artie:

    http://www.birdphotographers.net/for.....a-nice-juvie.

Nice one, I like the smooth water with just a hint of a ripple. Good reflection, and a nice study in transitional plumage.

    Artie:

Clean, sharp, well exposed, nice angle in frame.

A well crafted image, with good information to go with it.

    Cheers

Great image, Arti. I like the smooth water and the reflection.
What I like the most about it is the beautiful well defined pattern, the great pose and the peacefullness of the scene. I think this bird is a great looking shorebird regardless of the plumage.

Good detail throughout, sharp, and the calm water has yielded a good reflection. This is different that we dont see the legs. I like it.

Great light and reflection. Shooting angle is perfect for you to create what you wanted. I suppose we could get picky and say the main ripple line running through the centre of the bird detracts but we cant always get the conditions exactly the way we want them. It like it as presented!

Sharp with nice detail and good exposure. A better reflection could have made this image even better.

Another beauty. I love the reflection and the sweet look. Well done as always.

By the way. I saw this picture before on the net in your bulletin. http://www.birdsasart.com/bn241.htm when I first saw this bird. I visited this bulletin many times as an always good reference; just like all the bulletins from you. As always, thank you for all your teachings for all of us.

Thanks for the link, Vorant. There are lots of great shorebird ageing tips in that Bulletin.

As for the 2X, as I wrote in ABP II, competent photographers with good sharpness techniques should be able to consistently create sharp images with the 2X TCs and the 500 and 600 f/4L IS lenses at shutter speeds down to 1/60 sec. (as long as the bird stays still). I can't wait for the new Series II sper-teles with the 4-stop IS and the Series III TCs!

Artie, good reflection, thank you for the ID details. I like the pose with no legs in the shot and detail and exposure look great.
