    Default Desert Jewel

    Attached Images Attached Images

I saw this species for the first time last year when I went to the Sturt Desert here in Australia. I will soon -two weeks - be going out there again but this time armed with far more photography knowledge and with my own camera.

This image took three days to get as these guys are shy. The females, that are plain in colour, as far more accomadating. The males like to hide away from you.

This was taken with a 550D, 100-400 @ 350, 1/1000 @ 7.1, ISO 200. Shot as a Jpeg - I did not know there was such a thing as RAW files at the time. I have removed a branch that ran vertical to the left of the tail.

    Thanks Tom

    I forgot - this is a White-winged Fairy Wren.

Really pretty bird on a cool perch. I'm not normally a fan of squarish crops but this one works well. Detail looks a little coarse in the blues, but overall a nice frame!

Great bird and a nice pose. Mega-over-sharpened and most likely oversaturated. You might consider getting rid of all the extra branches.

I guess I am the only one in here except you who actually saw this bird - colours are NOT oversaturated.
Agree that IQ is not great but I am sure you will get a better one soon. Keep in mind that they probably won't be in breeding plumage....

Correct on the oversharpened Arthur. This is a very heavy crop. I wish I had the 800 for these guys.

Ofer - as you know these guys are blue. I have never seen anything else like the blue that these guys are. I was going to say that I do not think this is oversatuated but agree that the IQ is not great. Just going through old Sturt images to see what I want to target this year around.

Doug - The square crop is not one I use often but here it seemed to work - I tried all manner of crops.

Tom, A large crop does not necessitate over-sharpening....

Lovely BG and like the pose....IQ has been mentioned, but as for the crop I would take a some off the bottom and if your ethics allow I would clone out some of the twigs. That would get you away from the square crop and the image would look a lot cleaner.

There will still be dominant males around but it might take 6 days to get the shot

You guys have some amazing wren species in Australia, but I have never seen this one posted before.

The plan is that you learn from the error. No interest here in punishing you. I wanted to make sure that you understood my point as it seemed that you did not. Cheers.

Karl - there are many amazing wrens down here and many that to date I have never seen. Some are found in remote locations with limited distributions. This species is rather special in that the male of the nominate species is black with white wings and is limited in it's distribution to an island off the coast of Australia. The male in the image above is of the race leuconotus and is common on the mainland. We do not however get them on the east coast of Australia.

Th Splendid fairy Wren is also a jewel.

Your right Chris - I hope that this time around with better reach and more of an idea as to what I'm doing then I should get some shots worth posting.

We looked for Cinnamon Quail Thrush for two weeks and only saw them on the last day!!!
