    Default Caspian Tern and Chick

This was photographed last year while I was photographing a Royal Tern nesting colony. It wasn't until months later when I processed a few images that I noticed, much to my delight, that it was a Caspian Tern. The adult had just come back in for a landing at the nest, and I love the way it looks as though her outstretched wings are protecting her chick. I would have liked better light, but we can't have everything we wish for.

Killer juxtaposition and pose with those raised wings. And two perfect head angles to go along with a good EXP. I love the soft light. What are your thoughts on the bill color as you remember it as compared to the image?

Very nice! Great shooting angle and eye contact with both birds. I think the chick can use some more sharpening and I wish for more room to the right.

Great pose of the parent and the presence of the chick is priceless.
I like the composition, but I think a 12x8 (original) format would work better.
    Great overall image, Marina.

very cool Marina love the pose and the chick, I am not seeing much feather texture perhaps due to flat light

Good job hand holding this image, as you mentioned the lighting was difficult. A wonderful image and cool behavior.

Lovely textures and wing position...Great to see them both in the image. And to see the colors of the surroundings and the nest adds for me.!

Lovely shot. I love the action in the picture. The chick adds to the "cuteness" meter. I agree about the catchlight on Mom but otherwise no nits from me.

I love way the parent seems to be protecting the chick. Not a lot of feather detail; perhaps a little more sharpening.

All I can remember is being surrounded by nesting birds and thinking/assuming they were all Royal Terns. I had heard the Caspians were nesting at this location and had looked for them earlier but had not found them. I was so excited about this pair that I don't think I even paid attention to the bill until months later during processing.

In general I see Capsian's bills as an odd shade of red while I see the Royal's bills as close to orange. This one looks more orange than red so it is easy to see how you might have missed this in the field. The funny thing is that some Royals have red bills (and I am pretty sure that some Caspians can have almost orange bills).
