    Default Mother and cub

Masai Mara Reserve. Shortly after this photo was taken the mother cheetah went hunting but without success. The cub settled down into a culvert next to the road to wait for her parent to return. The way the cubs wait has led to many people believing that they have been abandoned and then the cubs are 'rescued' to spend a life in captivity when in reality the adult cheetah was going to return. Lion and leopard cubs tend to be secreted somewhere in bushes away from roads and human eyes. Fortunately, this seems to be happening less often.

I left the tree line in as I felt that it framed the image but welcome opinions on whether it should be cropped or not.

I also did a version with more punch but didn't feel that it suited the subject, but am also happy to be convinced.

Actually Hilary I am hoping you have the tops of the trees as I would prefer them not clipped in the immediate FG line of them.

I like the wide-open feel here, hence my recommendation above.

Robert I have the tops of the trees right up to the top of the escarpment. The reason I cropped the tops of the trees is that the escarpment has quite a blue look to it and so there were patches of blue which I thought drew the eye. I'll have a try at posting another crop including the tops to see what you think but it will be tomorrow as I'm heading out for a while.

I love this...I love the pano crop, but I would rather take some off the bottom and add to the top to see more of the trees. This would add to the overall space of the image. Lovely stuff here Hilary

Love the wide open space you have in this image Hillary, what I imagine Masai Mara to be. The trees are great but I also feel the tops should not be clipped. Pano and comp is great.

Hilary - I agree with the others, beautiful wide open space and would prefer more of the trees. Well seen and captured.

Here is the re-cropped version. The escarpment wasn't nearly as blue as I had thought, in fact it isn't blue at all  … never trust the memory. I've reprocessed it in a more simple streamlined way and will be interested in any thoughts. Thank you so much to everyone who replied, I appreciate it very much.

    Another memory lapse … 40D not 7D

Hilary - IMO the repost takes it to a whole other level. Beautifully seen and captured.

Hi Hilary, i have been away for a bit, with intermittent internet access, so missed this. I love this shot, my favourite shot of yours in the last three months i think...beautiful. The cheetahs curved shape, with so much intensity to her pose, and the wonderful setting
