This is a new venue for me, I intend to return but make full use of the TC, unfortunately this is quite a big crop but I would appreciate your comments.

    Jonathan,

This is a beautiful looking bird and the nice looking green water is certainly a great BG but the large crop is showing with a lower IQ and lack of detail in the bird. White on the head looks hot as well.

The positioning of the bird is rather awkward and does not demonstrate the natural beautiful of this species. Please post the technical information in you next post Jonathan and good luck you next time out.

nice colors but I agree with Robert, lack of detail is hurting the grebe

This pose might not show the bird at its best.

A unique pose for sure but I would rather see the head and the crest up :). Excellent comments above. In addition, the midtones look a bit dark from here....

Thanks for the comments - lesson learned I will ensure future submissions are not cropped so much.

Sorry for missing the tech data Canon 7D Canon 500mm f4 L IS ISO 400 -0.33 1/640 sec f7.1, the light was changing all the time and of course it changed when shooting contra jour, depending on the shot they were -0.33 to + 1.6. I have found that -0.6 is often optimal but I was bearing in mind Artie's recent blog on shooting to the right - which of course I agree with
