    Default Tern On

Spent several days photographing mating Royal and Sandwich Terns at the beach which was quite rewarding but very challenging. It's difficult to isolate the pair and achieve good angles. This is one of my favorites because of the pose, the light and b/c both feet are visible on the male. Had to straighten the horizon and add a bit of canvas. It was difficult to photograph on this uneven beach.

    Marina:

Good timing, good exposure, and yes, good to see both feet.

Do you use a bubble level on the camera? I find it helpful esp. on slopes were it is harder to judge the angle in the heat of the battle.

    Smidge tight at the top.

    Cheers

Fantastic behaviour shot Marina!!! Agree it is a bit tight at the top but not much. I think using a bubble level is a complete waste of time and I won't even consider it in the field. You can easily crop and adjust rotation as needed in PP. It is a different story if you are trying to get BIF from a tripod - then a bubble level is important.

I personally never used one or I paid attention to the one on the tripod. Although there are times I wish I have one.

It seems like you were shooting at an angle towards the shore. Great behavior captured.

Forgot to mention that I am referring to handheld work which is what I think Marina is doing most of the time. Wen using a tripod it is quite useful and even important IMHO.

Excellent action captured, Marina. I suspect that their eyes might pop a bit more in a larger version?

Well timed for the action Marina, and love the swept back wings. Difficult to bring out their eyes, but you have done well there. Well exposed, and agree, adding to the top will work.

Marina, terrific shot. As you said, those two feet visible is quite special. Loved the exposure and the wing position....and the pose of the female as well. Yes, to tight at top...it should be possible to extend the canvas there.
