Default RWBB female with dragon fly snack

    Good day all:

Have not had a chance to get out for a while, so was pleased to spend some time this morning at the local fish hatchery, shooting with Gary Esman. The RWBB were really chomping on the dragonflies. One of the pathways was strewn with dragonfly wings from where the birds had stopped to eat. This particular dragonfly was pretty well chewed up. BG from distant cat tails and reeds.

Post: CS5 curves, selective sharpening, 25% crop for comp. Removed flash catchlight.

    Advice and comments always appreciated.

    Cheers

Nice job with fill flash to even out the lighting from the right. Good sharpness throughout, and nice eye contact. I wish the dragonfly was more recognizable. I might tone down the brightest parts of the perch, and I'd consider a slight crop off the left.

Looks good! I knew I forgot something and now I realize it was my flash. Nice background, very difficult there to achieve one. A fitting perch.

Love the shot except the HA. A few more degree towards the camera would have been better.

Super pose Randy, and good job with fill flash - subtle, but there. I like the overall exposure on the RWBB, together with the detail. Lovely soft colours in the BG.

Superb shot -- great light, BG, and sharpness. Would also look great on a 4 : 5 vertical, IMHO.

    Thanks everyone for the comments.

I tried a version with a tighter crop from the left, which worked well, but I really liked the background in this image, so left in more of it.

I also wish the dragonfly was in better shape, but its kind of like an osprey chewing the head off the fish. They knock the wings off pretty quickly!

    Cheers
