Default Problem with MK III camera body

    Hi All,

I'm experiencing a problem with my 1D MK III. When using either the "L" or "H" Drive speed setting, the LCD gives me an "Error 99" and tells me "picture taking is impossible" and I have to turn the power off then on again, before the shutter will operate. Any ideas, or do I just contact Canon?

    Cheers,

    Bruce Gove

Bruce, have you seen this dissertation on "Error 99" at LensRentals.com?

I'd send it in and make sure to keep accurate records and be a good consumer. Such problems can be like having the flu--hard to get rid of.

About 1 year ago I had a 40D with that error. Luckily Canon service is fairly close to my house. I brought it in they said it was the on-board flash assembly, gave me a price of about $150.00, they fixed it, it was okay and 2 weeks later I got same error. Brought it back and they replaced the shutter for free, same error a few weeks later, brought it back and they replaced something which was described to me similar to a mother board, again no charge. He said "error 99" is a common but very general error. I essentially got a new camera for $150. I would send it to Canon.

    Hi Artie,

The above msg was advice from you to send my MKIII to Canon for service regarding an error 99 msg. The error messaging occurred when I was using L or H speed continuous picture taking. I sent it in, and in 7 days, got it back. They say they "replaced the component" causing the problem. Plus, they cleaned the sensor (smile!), realigned the shutter box, and "brought the camera back to full working order." They also reminded me that my camera was out of warranty (new in 2007), and that this service was done as a courtesy, and there was no charge or guarantee given - which of course I didn't expect. Long story short, the problem still exists! Should I keep sending the camera back to Canon until they fix it or sell me something that works the way it's supposed to?
    Cheers,
    Bruce

Sorry that I almost missed this Bruce. I would send it back once more and then if the problem persists go up the chain of command. At some point a good consumer would wind up with a new camera but it will require some work.... Good luck.
