Default SHould I upgrade to lightroom 3?

I've got 2.7, but some friends suggested that I upgrade.
I'm sorry if this has been rehashed several times but I could not find it with a search, but those of you who did upgrade, what do you see as the major advantage?
Also, I have 4 gigs of RAM, and that's my desktop limit. I have Windows 7 64 bit, and lightroom 2 slows it down to a halt, and thats why my friends suggested upgrading.
But my experience tells me people here know more than most of my friends when it comes to this kind of question.
Any advice will be appreciated. Just don't want to spend $99 to have more computer slow ups, or very few advantages.
    Thanks
    Stan

Why is your desktop limit 4 GB? If you have Win 7 64bit, this doesn't sound right. It seems unlikely that a motherboard has only one memory slot, and 4GB memory sticks are available. I don't know about if you should upgrade lightroom or not, but I'm wondering if you have photoshop? regards~Bill

Besides the ram limit, I would think that it is other programs running that is sucking up memory and slowing things down. Check other programs you don't need are runnign and shut them down. Items on the taskbar are running and taking resources, as are background jobs. How many windows do you have open when it slows down?

More ram can help, but perhaps not as much as shutting down programs you do not need. And most pre-installed windows come with a lot of stuff most of us do not need. Best to uninstall things not used and not needed. My son (computer security expert) calls this de-crapifying. Hmmm...looks like a common term on the internet, e.g.

    Thanks guys
Bill, I have 2 2 Gig slots, that's up from the 2 1 g cards I had when I bought the computer almost 8 years ago. According to Dell, that's all I can put in it.
The laptop I bought this year has 6 gigs, but I'm going to use this machine at least until I get the nice "glass" I've bought (500 4L) I bought this year as well paid off.
Is the noise reduction as good as the site says? I was looking at buying noise ninja as well, because NR in Lightroom 2 is not impressive.

    Interesting link Roger!

    Stan,
The Lightroom 3 is good. There are number of useful features.

If you have problems with noise than LR3 is the way to go.
It does a much better job with noise than LR2.

Another thing to consider is the size of your Lightroom catalog that you are using. I've noticed on my machine that larger, more cluttered catalogs will slow Lightroom WAY down. Create a new catalog, and it runs much better. My wife and I used to shoot a fair number of weddings and ran into this issue from time to time. Managing images before or when you bring them in to LR and using different catalogs seems to help us out a lot. Good luck!

Start - Run - MSConfig will show you all the crap that starts up and you can uncheck the questionables until you decide you don't really need or want them.

Check out http://www.soluto.com too. This one will show you everything that starts up, how long it took to start, and give you the option to disable or delay the process with recommendations.
