Taken in Kruger National Park very late one evening, with the light fading fast. Mom and pups were very playful just outside their den.

    50D/EF500f4 1/80 @ f5.6 iso400 FF levels and curves.

    C&C allways welcome.

Great eye contact, nice interaction between the two. Exposure looks pretty good. Like the BG a lot. To my eye the cub face looks a little soft..

I like this a lot! However, the slow SS resulted in some motion blur on the cub's face.

    Hi Pieter

interesting image... but I actually feel the eye contact with viewer takes away from image... as it seems you have interrupted a moment between adult/mum and pup as they have stopped there play/bonding to focus on you or something else. so would have preferred eye contact between mother and cub...hope this makes sense

framing , exposure , colour all looks good..
shooting at f4 increasing the iso would have helped with the slow shutter and the resulting softness in cubs face..but I am sure you know this.. sometime s we carried away with the moment and forget our settings.

Hi Pieter, nice to see you posting again.

I think/feel Peter's observation/comments above hit the nail on the head with regard to the eye contact, as if you were interrupting their 'playtime' so to speak, but you weren't. Good low POV and shooting at f/5.6 has given you that nice diffused background to isolate the subjects, especially with the 500 too. In this situation I feel your techs were correct as I am not sure how the 50D handles higher ISO's.

BTW How is your PP going, looks good, hope things are working out.

Thank you all your comments and feedback, much appreciated. The slow SS was a factor and affected the other shots in the sequence, this was the best of them.

Steve I have tried higher ISO's with the 50D and have not been very successful particularly in low light conditions, but maybe need to keep trying. Thank you, my PP is progressing well with your help, .

Peter you raise a very valid point which I had not considered. As is often the case with a sighting like this in Kruger there are a lot of vehicles around with constant movement and this was probably one of those moments. However the mother and cubs seemed not to be perturbed and playtime continued until we all had to head back to camp.

a nice capture here Pieter...good "apparent" low angle (knowing you were shooting from your window in typical Kruger terrain )

most of the points raised above are good...Peter pointed out that eye contact between them would have been first prize...and having the image as you shot it with a sharper face on the cub would probably have been second prize...

PP is looking good...I would think you can at least push the 50D successfully to ISO-800, especially as your PP proficiency increases?

Thank you Dumay, Morkel and Harshad, your comments are much appreciated.

Morkel I will continue trying at higher ISO's, thanks for the advice.
