Taken at San Joaquin Sanctuary at Irvine, CA today.
It was an overcast day. The baby avocets spent hours wading and looking for food, and finally got tired and sleepy. They kept calling when walking towards mom, which alerted me to get ready for the shot. They slept under her wings for a few mins and went back to eat.

    1D Mark IV, 500 f4, f11, 1/640s, ISO 1000 ( I forgot to change my f11 setting after removing the 2x converter), 580 EX II set at manual 1/2.

    C and C welcome!

A precious image, nice behaviour captured, thanks for the story details.

Sharp, well exposed, good flash work. Looks like it needs some CCW rotation.

I might be tempted to move them off center, to the right a bit.

Yes, larger f/stop would have helped smooth out the details in the water a bit in the BG, which would help.

    Cheers

    Agree with Randy here.
Not sure what the shooting condition is, a bit lower would have better.
Glad to see you posting. :) Love to see your images from FL.

Thanks for your comments, Randy and Troy! I really like your suggestions, so glad I posted it here and learned something new. I will try the CCW rotation and change the composition and repost.
Troy, I agree getting low angle would be good, next time I will lay flat.

Indeed this behavior happened so fast I didn't have time to change any settings whatsoever. The babies were 20 feet away feeding on their own when they suddenly sprint back to their mom, and disappeared under her wings within a few seconds. (And yea I couldn't stop going out to shoot instead of sitting at home processing my florida pics)

Excellent critique by Randy. Judging by the reflection of the parent, you need a lot of rotation. Nice sharp details and moment is superb. Angle a little too steep for my liking but clearly you did not have a lot of time.
