Somedays there are only geese! I took this image in January and even though it's a favorite of mine, I recognize it doesn't have universal appeal. To me, the grass and debris on the bill lends a bit of comedy to the somewhat haughty pose. C&C encouraged and greatly appreciated.

Katie, good eye contact, and the head and beak are nice and sharp. I like how you have created the comp, but wish in this, that the rest of the BG was uniform with the white as the main BG.

    Hi Katie,
nice exposure and sharp face, I am not sure about this comp however. I would like to see the full head and neck if you have it.

Personally, I rather like the out-of-the-ordinary composition, which emphasizes the bowling pin shape of the chest, and the perfectly transitioned background is very pleasant.

I'm not a huge fan of the grass etc on the beak though, as otherwise the image has a smooth minimalist feeling.

    Kaite:

From a color standpoint, the eye works well with the blue BG, and I also like the simplicity of the image.
Maybe a sliver more of the forehead, but I overall really like the comp.

    Cheers

Hi Katie. As you say, this won't have universal appeal - but I like it as a change of pace. The comp is rather creative and I like the colors. I even like the bits of grass, though I think the image would also work well without them and with scaly bits on the bill cleaned up.

Hi Katie. I like this OOTB comp! It's artistically creative IMO! I really like the curving line of the birds chest and belly! I think I might cleanup the bill if it were mine though. The BG being divided in half by the horizon kind of bothers me but this could be fixed by cropping off the bottom a bit if you agree! This also seems to enhance the S curve. Nice work!

Katie: I think this is awesome!! I've seen a million snow geese images, but none like this. I like the composition. I don't need the whole bird to know what I'm looking at. I think the background really makes this sing. This is a VERY artistic image of an "ordinary" subject. (At least ordinary for those of us who have the chance to frequent Bosque Del Apache)

Hi Katie. I really like the unique comp, and the colors are terrific, as are the details in the whites. I especially like the blue eye picking up the blue BG, and the broken-rule 50/50 BG. I'm with Randy that a little more forehead could help; otherwise, a great shot.

    Thank you all!

I was quite hesitant to post this image because (even though I really, really liked it) I knew it broke some rules and didn't fit with what is usually expected here. But last night, I thought it was time to take a risk and see what I would learn from BPN critiques. Your responses have helped me clarify why this works so well for me and I'm pleased to know that it speaks to others, as well.

    As always, C&C greatly appreciated!

    Regards,
    Katie

Katie, another vote here for a really stunning image. The eyes and the BG compliment each other so well. Great composition and I enjoyed the change of pace. Well done.

    katie,

Well done! Yes, something different. I like the image as is, but would also try to the following (perhaps you did): the curve ends vertically at the bottom of the image, but how about extending it further so that it curves around to the left so more of the bottom of the bird shows? I do think the eye at the top is a little close to the frame and would have included a little more of the head, but as is it is quite striking and may be just what some advertising firms would be looking for. Would make a nice fine art print too.

Roger, thanks for taking the time to comment and make suggestions, I'm pleased that you like the image I agree that it might be improved with just a bit more of the head at the top but it is full frame and I'm not sure whether I want to try to add canvas. Your feedback is much appreciated.

    Best,

    Katie

    Katie,
I was not suggesting adding to the canvas (I generally do not like to do that either). What I would do in a similar situation where the subject is so close is to make a mosaic. I would have made a few more frames, one higher and lower, and more to the left, all as fast as I could to minimize movement. Then if I decided I wanted a little more, e.g. the top of the head, I could mosaic a couple of frames. So if you took other images, you might have some that covered more and might work in a mosaic.

    Roger
