    Default Hooptie Deux Stacked TCs....

    Attached Images Attached Images

I created this image on the Hooptie Deux on 8 JAN 2011. This spoonbill was perched in a tree. Canon 800mm f/5.6L IS lens with stacked 1.4 and 2X TCs and the Mark IV. Possibly the Series II TCs.... Not sure when I got the Series III TCs. ISO 400. Evaluative metering +2/3 stop: 1/400 sec. at f/13. To learn the trick of focusing accurately with stacked TCs click here.

Beautiful Artie. Sweet light, perfect head angle, and impressive sharpness (especially for stacked TCs). Did you have to blur the BG at all?

Fantastic sharpness, esp. considering the focal length (2,240mm not including the crop factor!). I like the multicolored BG, blurred just enough but with some texture too. Looks like there's a second catchlight below the primary one.

I'm assuming the camera was tripod-mounted? If not, and it was HH, then you really have some steady hands!

If you didn't mention the stacked converters I would have never known. Excellent detail and love the light and the even background. I use the movie mode zoomed in 10X to focus on most of my cooperative subjects but having the histogram showing on the screen in Live view is a better choice I think.

Artie - did you focus using Live View? (with stacked TCs on a rocking boat?!)

Sweet light, and like the pose and HA. Overall, well exposed, and I do like the colours. Killer BG too. Well captured.

    Lovely all the way around.

I wish Nikon TC's could be stacked. Even stacked, the Canon ones present the best I can pull out of Nikon TC's a single

This of course was on a tripod with everything locked down and top-notch sharpness techniques. BTW, you need steady hands when doing this on a tripod!

With the technique that I share in the 7D and MIV User's Guides I actually use AF! My eyes are just not good enough to focus even though I go to 5X or 10X....

Funny, nobody above your post said anything about using tubes. I wrote about that trick in the original ABP 15 years ago after learning it from George Lepp. I am guessing that you edited your own post to cover your tracks after you originally posted this:

"You couldn't have taken this one with the new TC simply because the new TC cannot be stacked...."

    :)

Yes to AF with Live View. See here. for details. Most of the time we get out of the boat to photograph on the Hooptie Deux as we did here.

Thanks. Nikon TCs can be stacked if you file down the offending pin.

There is no need to use an extention tube with the old TC as I use them stacked every now and then with good results.

Wrong again Mr. Ofer. Stacking without an extension tube first became possible with the Series II TCs. My, you are having a bad day with your facts....

Thanks Tom, I should have mentioned that such efforts are experimental and that the bird was sitting on a very cluttered perch.... So my only chance was to go mega-tight. Other advantages of doing so are not scaring the bird away and working with a much shallower angle of inclination (than if I have been able to get much closer....)

Holy smokes!!!! Look at all those dust bunnies in the original file :eek:
Are they always in plague proportions or was the severity multiplied due to the stacking(extra surfaces = more bunnies)? I'm sure f/13 had something to do with it to.

The Scapulars(?) are unbelievable. The colour is insane!!

Yes. F13. Sometimes I get lazy with sensor cleaning :). BTW, I have seen 1000 times worse.... In Lens Pen DEMOS on IPTs I have seen sensors that look as if someone dumped a full vacuum cleaner bad on them....

Superb light, bg and pose as well. Superbly done Artie.
