    Default Horned Lark

Took this Monday evening. About the only way to photograph these is to slowly drive along agricultural roads. With all the snow we got this year the snowbanks lining the roads are about eye level, and since the larks like to perch on those it's just perfect. The good thing about country roads is the lack of traffic, and this permits one to drive on the wrong side of the road for good long stretches, alllowing even closer approach :).

One tip to give you all: turn the heat off and open all windows to let the heat escape the car BEFORE you reach your subjects...a couple of images were ruined (fuzzy) by the escaping heat through my window (even with the lens sticking way out).

Great tip Daniel and lovely image.!! I very much like the Bg and the contrast with the snow. The lark is sharp with lovely lighting and head turn as well as excellent detail and eye contact. A real beauty !! No nits for me.

I've noticed my 100-400 is very sensitive to this and produces very poor results if you shoot from a warm car. Maybe other teles are the same in this regard.

Forgot to mention Daniel- beautiful image! The context of the snow is very good and the background really makes the bird stand out.

A fine capture Daniel - great exposure, detail and composition. The complimentry BG is superb and the snow covering is a real bonus!!
Good tip re warmth and cold atmosphere - can cause condensation on interior elements :(
