If you are heading to Botswana in the next couple of years, this is a blantant plug for a Zim add on. Hwange is highly recommended and only 2.5hrs worth of bush flights from the Delta.

Wow, what a stunning image Russell, love the way the elephants looks as if they all leaning to the right side of the frame, and also the shadow of the biggest elephants tusk, great details, good colour. Super work all around for me...
cheers
Grant

Excellent image Russell, you have captured the mood and movement beautifully. Also like the composition and placement of the herd in the frame.
What a photograph! This is magazine cover stuff!
Russell, another excellent image from your Hwange series. Post more as they are a great advertisement for the area, photographically if nothing else.
Beautiful light and action. Was this taken at the same time as your Nature's Best awarded image?
What an awesome image Russell! The light , dust, different tones of the elephants. Very well done!

Stunning image Russell. The dust really adds to it. Well done. Btw I've been to Zim but only to Vic Falls.
TFS,
Rachel
This is something else Russell. A truly amazing image.
Breathtaking and dynamic composition....takes it to the next level. Wow!
Thanks for all your comments....Planning on heading back this way next year.
Thanks, Hilary. You should visit.
This was taken at the same time as my Nature's Best image. Having checked this morning, the images were only taken 3 minutes apart.
The scary thing about this particularly pan is that I have another 30 different images all taken on the same drive. :)
I notice that a number of you are thinkin of heading in this direction.
In my experience, the best pan for silhouettes in the in the Private Makalolo concession run by wilderness. I have found the best time of year for achieving this type of Silhouette has been in August in a normal rainfall year.
The pans have dried out, and the herds come to the last remaining watersources. There is not too much dust in the atmosphere, and the intense light at sunset allows for this style of image.
From September onwards, the dust blocks out a lot of the Sun and I found my silhouettes did not have the same dramatic effect.

I guess I am going to be the odd man out here as I feel the two central dark masses/elephants blend in too much together making it hard to decern what is what. If that was one dark mass/elephant with the more faint ones in the BG, I would feel differently.
But is the image to depicted in detail & clarity of the subject, or more to evoke atmosphere and setting on this one?I guess I am going to be the odd man out here as I feel the two central dark masses/elephants blend in too much together making it hard to decern what is what.

OK Gentlemen, time I think to pause for refreshments, don't you?

However, may I like to remind you both, should you wish to continue, then please keep your exchanges polite and respectful, also PLEASE, refrain from using 'colourful' abbreviations in your replies.
Thank you.

Hey Russell and Ken,
Please keep on topic for critiquing an image! The other comments are fine for the general forum but please refrain from going "off topic" here.
Hey Russell, I'm with Robert on this one as the mood is fantastic....but I wish there was a bit more seperation in the central 2 ele's. I think if you go back in PP'ing and see if you can get even the slightest tonal seperation......that would take this up another notch and quell any concerns that Robert and I have.
Russell,
This is a stunning image, but I am with Robert and Roman on the separation of the two elephants in the center. The little elephant on the right really moves the image up in impact, as long as there is even a hint of separation of the two largest elephants in the center.

this is true africa ! Colours and moods are phenomenal
I would really like to see the basic RAW file for this to enable me to understand what has been done in PP.
I only ask because the colours are nothing like I have ever experienced.
I would also like to add my own personal recommendation to visit Zimbabwe, my annual pilgrimage will be in September this year.
It is a marvelous place and the majority of its population is very worthy of all the support we can bring.
I accept the photo for what it is -- a fabulous image that stunningly captures the mood of a herd on the move.
The trailing small one playing catch-up is the clincher for me.
You made my day!!! A marvelous image indeed!
Russell, incredible image, add my praise to the long list. Thank you for sharing this. Lovely colors!
