    Default Tree Swallow

I had four Swallow species flitting around a pond in Cape May a few weeks ago. Would have loved to capture all four, but the Tree Swallow was the only one that would perch, and the others were just too fast for me. Sun was off to the left, so just a tiny bit more head turn toward me put his face in shadow. Of a number of frames, this was the best compromise between lighting and HA. C&C appreciated.

Nice and sharp with lots of detail revealed. I like the pose with wings nicely displayed.

If mine I would look at less perch and a bit more room for wing tips and then perhaps a bit in front of swallow as well. Perhaps a bit of clean up on perch also.

Exposure looks vg and I like the nice choice of dof.

    Well done.

I like the pose - had it just landed, or perfromring a balancing act? Tough light angle as you mention, any way to have moved left? As is the whites on the throat look a little bright, and the eye could use a bit of fixing IMO...perhaps if the pupil was changed to brown instead of the current blue that would make a positive difference. Perch size is OK with the open wings giving the swallow a bigger look, but I'm not really fond of the frilled tip.

Very nice pose. Light and headangle not perfect but still a good image with lovely colours and detail.

Thanks Daniel. In this case the bird was just about to take off. I also got some landing shots (focusing on the perch while my wife spotted and calling 'here comes one' so I could anticipate) but the HA in those was worse. I was squeezed into the left corner of a viewing platform over the pond, so moving left was not an option. The throat is generally at 235-240 but there are a few pixels in the 250's -- I had to tone it down in the OP but maybe could have gone a bit further. The pupil is almost pure black; I was surprised when I brightened the eye slightly to find the iris a lapis blue color, and I agree it looks a little odd; maybe I brightened it just a tad too much. I actually liked the frayed perch but that's personal, I guess. Thanks for the comments.

Good show of the wings Bill, and I like the blues on the head. Im fine with the space in front, but agree a tad more could be added behind. Hope you got some of the actual take off.

Thanks Stuart. No, I missed the actual take-off. This is almost full-frame -- I cropped a bit from left and bottom -- so he was out of the frame before I realized it. Perhaps I should have left a little more on the left.

Thanks for the additional info Bill. I wrote pupil but I indeed meant iris... Still a great picture considering the circumstances...
