    Default Checking out potential prey

Another in the series of the lion coming straight at me at sunrise. Here he has stepped into a position where light coming through the forest is illuminating his head while he is checking out something in the forest over my right shoulder (never did see what he was looking at as I was focused on him).
    On the Serengeti, February, 2011.

    1DIV, 300 mm f/2.8 lens at f/4, 1/800 sec at ISO 800. Crop to 11 megapixels.
    Aperture priority.

    Roger,

I like this a lot more than your last post, my only suggestion would be a little more room at the top if you have it

Roger - I like the pose and his look here. He really seems to have suffered a lot of damage in his recent battles though mostly to his face. I might prefer still a little more room below for him to step into if you have it. The yellows also seem a tad saturated on my monitor but that may have been how it actually was.

    HI Roger
its always exhilarating capturing a lion walking towards you.. especially with a prime lens...not the prettiest lion probably close to the end of his prime years...

the crop is a bit tight for me .. not sure how much have cropped but definitely could do with some breathing space left and top..I would also take out some yellow about -15 ,-10 reds, this will also tone down your BKG as well. I would use a S/H tool just to get some more detail from mane , eye and legs...

    Roger,

I would agree with the others that more room top and bottom was needed; I would even have gone with more room left and right. It just feels cramped to me.

I like this view of his feet and the way he's focused on something else. Agree with more room on top. With his head slightly lowered it seems as if he's trying not to bump his head at the top of the frame.

Hi Roger, again, would agree on the above comments, but like the previous one, I feel it needs some more clarity and sharpness, perhaps this fell into the same batch?

Roger, I can only echo what most have noted about the all round space...looks to need just a touch more sharpening and some opening up of shadow areas as suggested...

Thanks everyone for the comments. I went back to the beginning and processed the image from scratch. I'm having some color issues with my system (it is complex--I'm running ubuntu linux and photoshop cs5 in windows in virtualbox under linux). I did not like the colors as they showed in firefox in my original posting above (seemed too yellow to me). So in my reprocessing, I've made it look better on my monitors and with firefox. I'll be interested in what you are seeing. This image was made just after sunrise, with light pouring through the forest, so very orange/yellow from the sun, mixed with a lot of green reflecting from the forest. I did a number of stretched in LAB color space to avoid the color shifts with using curves in RGB color space. The image needed slight rotation and the original I see I rotated slightly too much as the lion appears to me to be too far clockwise. I can not add space below or right unless I invent stuff in the lower right corner. I would prefer taking a little off the top.

The image is quite sharp, but I tend to be conservative on sharpening, but for this post I sharpened more than usual based on comments above. The fur of the lion is quite fine, and an 800 pixel high image does not resolve much (another plug for raising the limit to 1000). Now with more space around the lion, the lion is smaller and resolves less detail.

Anyway, here is a re-work. let me know how it looks, especially color.

Now the lion looks way orange to me., particularly because it's morning and not sunset.
Using the lightest spot under his nose on the rt side I get R174, G163, B128

I did a repost with some sharpening and lightening the rt eye.

Measuring the same spot on the lion I get R199, G196, B182
Still a bit yellow in rising sun...I used the foremost leg for guidance as to color (a bit gray now?)

Anyways, using a 17" Macbook Pro, calibrated with Eye-One, measured with Mac's DigitalColor Meter app. I suppose if you are getting similar readings for the images on your machine, then your color settings must be ok. I'm also using Safari which is color managed and the op images don't have any color space embedded so that may be skewing things on my end.
