    Default New Pet??

    Attached Images Attached Images

Heard an unusual noise outside my house at about 9:00 p.m. last night. Grabbed the camera and opened a window to take some shots of this 6 footer @ 20 ft. (8000 ISO )
He was curious but not concerned. In fact I even got to see some back scratching on the oak trunk!
Started with Andrew's settings in Frac and made a few adjustments and masked back the eyes...
    All C&C welcome.

    Steve,

8000 ISO?? You fortunate ones with your large 35mm sized sensors.

Love the composition, the effect used and the fact that both eyes are toward the camera. If it were mine I might fool around with the WB adjustment to bring a little more warmth into the image. Great capture.

Great eye contact and comp. The frac. works well here. Adjusting the WB seems like a good idea.

Great composition, Steve. I like the posture and the look. Excellent details too... the fract effect is very effective. What is that red tinge below the front paw?

Frac threw in a bit of a wild blue/magenta color cast that I reduced in LR and the color of the leaf below his paw seemed to spread into his paw. I will desaturate it a bit. Thanks!

Steve, Great capture and quick thinking. I like the idea of warming it up a little. Looks like it has blood on it's paw. Nice pose and Fract work.

Thanks denise. Just want everyone to know that it is not blood. Just a frac effect (which I will desaturated) on his brown pad &/or leaf coloration.
He is a very healthy looking bear. And the neighbors say that he must have enjoyed their bird feeder the night before... TRASHED IT!!

Hi Steve, nice use of Fractalius on this bear. Looks like a touch of red on the snout to desaturate a little also. I often find Fractalius does throw in some interesting color too, sometimes it works sometimes it doesn't. I'd love to get some bear shots like this - I see lots of them around Horseshoe Lake near Parry Sound, Ontario, but it is always their backside as they bolt into the forest.

Love the kind of "got busted" expression on his face, Steve. Way to seize a great photo opportunity on the spot. Nice application of frac, looks great on the fur.

Steve, I had to chuckle at the thought of this big bear "snacking" on a bird feeder! He/she must have been really hungry and would have run up quite a tab at the sushi bar...

I really like the fract work here and agree that a little warmth would be nice. Do you have Nik Color Efex Pro? The brilliance/warmth filter would work very nicely here. Good one!

Thanks Andrew, Maureen, Brendan and Kerry! Yes, I have the Nik plugin and I will give the filter a try.
    Really appreciate the suggestions.

Nice comp and fract work Mark! I agree with what others said about warming the image a bit and toning down the red bits.

Steve, I like the fract work - especially in the face. I had a bear come through my property several years ago and bent my bird feeder pole to the ground He was just passing through and I haven't seen anything like it since. (My birds are grateful).

Thanks Judy and Cheryl! Thanks for sharing your bear story, Cheryl. Glad the bear hasn't come back. They sure can cause some damage if food is involved. Had one break into my cabin. Still have the old metal cabinets with his bite marks. Two broken windows... one on one end of the cabin and one on the other.
Just had a dozen 8th graders walk through the woods from a neighbors house to visit me this evening. Their eyes got pretty wide when I told them about the bear. After a brief visit they decided to scoot home before it got dark.
