I find the reticulated giraffe particularly attractive with their clearly defined markings and we had some good sightings at Meru National Park. I wanted to keep some of the dry habitat in the image so decided to keep the crop horizontal, although I did try a vertical crop but didn't like it so much.

Tks Harshad, are you saying I should add some more at the bottom? I do have more if necessary. Thanks for commenting.

Hi Hilary, colour looks good and your processing is really coming along, looks like the new toy is making a big difference.

Interesting to read your note, as when I first viewed the image I felt it cried out for a portrait format, primarily due to the subject. However, based on your thoughts, certainly adding a bit more to the foot would be helpful as Harshad has mentioned, but also I feel you may need to add at the top too, as the Giraffe for me is a fraction close, WDYT 50/50? Not sure if this is FF, or how much you have to play with, but adding sky would be easy. Would like to have seen this with a polariser applied (truck loads of SS to play with too) just to add a bit more punch, but you could tweak it a little in PS as you know now.

With a tad more room would work well and good position within frame. Got me thinking about Giraffes now

    Hilary,

I like the repeating patterns of the green bushes and think your decision to go horizontal and use that to your advantage in the image a good one. I agree that a room room below is a good one. Due to the tallness of the subject, more base at the bottom will help to balance the image out.

Thanks Steve & Robert. I have room to alter the crop so will give it an adjustment.

As the BG is not very conducive I might be tempted to change this into portrait whilt you are adding to top and bottom.

Hilary - I like this a lot. It's nice to see a different comp with the giraffe and the head being clear of all the trees helps. I agree that a little more space below would improve an already well done image.

Hilary, interesting to read your thoughts...I more often than not find myself shooting giraffes in landscape compositions as I like placing them in their environments...

I like the textures of these giraffe as well, and though the BG is "cluttered" it has not obstructed the view to the animal.

I agree on adding a sliver of space below and above if you have it (above should be easy without having it though )

Thanks for the additional feedback. I have more space and originally had cropped with more space but wondered if it left too much rhs but given the consensus I think I'll go back to my original looser crop.

I like this one as posted. The dip in the BG tree to the right (as viewed) helps show off their height. Detail and colors look good.

Hi Hillary , nice environmental image of this species of Giraffe. Nicely exposed with the markings so different from our species. Agree with more space and as I like subjects in environment might consider more on the right to include the partial tree if you have it - more of a pano.

Thanks Steve and Pieter. I do have more on the right and will include the tree in my final version.
