I'm more of a macro and landscape kind of guy but I told the Captain I'd post some stuff from the FL trip. I think I got the ID right. Thanks to Artie's Fort DeSoto site guide, I wasn't at a complete loss on where to go like I usually am

Edit: Yeah, the whites got a little buggered in the processing. No blinkies on the RAW. Reprocess time :)

    Chris,

Greetings. Good low angle shot (that ground skimmer pod thingy seems to work well). Overall detail is good, but lost some in the brighter whites (hard to argue with the balance between the whites and the blacks, though). Good show! You might lose the black dot in the lower middle water.

    Cheers,

    -Michael-

Hi Chris, nice to see you here with your friend Beaker...

I love the almost tinted look to the bird and the nice colors and blur of the background. Pretty tough getting both blacks and whites on a bird like this. The whites did get a little toasty, but not too terrible. Often happens in the jpeg conversion. Love the composition. Thanks for sharing!

Chris, Nice to see one in breeding plumage. I like the sharp details and you did a good job w/ the exposure.

I like this one Chris. Great to see the species. Nice walking action and I love the low angle. I wonder if there's any detail in the eye that could be dodged out? Agree that this is a tough subject with the lighting you had. I looked around for hot pixels with Digital Colormeter and only found a very few and they are interspersed with detail and I would say the whites are fine. The blacks are not clipped but there are patches with little detail so it gives this impression.

I picked up a cheap aluminum, non-stick skillet from Walmart. Drill a hole though the center and put a round headed bolt through bottom with washer and nut on the other side to hold it in place. Leave enough threads above the nut to attach a ball head or other mount to it. I cut off most of the handle except for maybe an inch and drilled a hole through that to attach a strap, hook, or other fastener if needed.

It's not as pretty or as thick as the manufactured ones but it works just the same. I have a problem with paying $100 for a hunk of aluminum and a bolt :)
