    Default Approaching lion at sunrise

This is the same lion as I posted a week or so ago, only this time much closer. He was approaching at a speed of 1.7 meters per second. (I have a couple of hundred images of this guy approaching, so hope you don't get too bored!)

Canon 1DIV, 1/1000 sec ISO 800 300 mm f/2.8 + 1.4x TC at 5.6 aperture priority (he was moving in and out of shadows).

Hi Roger, this lion is certainly 'battle' scared and has seen some action!!! You certainly have to feel sorry for him and as for that right eye, it looks so big & unreal, scary.

Regarding the image it's a little tight in the frame for me, especially at the foot of the image (sorry no pun intended) as there is no real space for him to walk into, any extra? I also think it could do with some selective sharpening just to bring out some more detail.

    Roger,

I agree with Steve's comments on the image. I hope you also got some tight closeups on that old-weathered face?

Man, that old beast has seen some battles! Life is hard out there. Thanks for showing his face to the world.

Nice old well worn face, the changing light has not helped you here, but it seems to have resulted in a pretty good result. I also think a tad more sharpening would help.
As to extra space it may have been nice bit this is always a problem with a moving subject and a fixed lens.

I like the tight crop but would have prefered more room at the bottom. The lions foot was nearly cut off and my eye always goes there. i would also give the image another round of sharpening. This lion has been in a few fights WOW TFS

Man, looks like a boxer's face - that left eye is a mess, and he has an impressive number of scars all over his face. (Some king of the jungle, huh?)

I like the light and crop for the upper portion of the lion; agree that a bit more space at the bottom would help.

certainly a seasoned warrior Roger! I agree with my fellow mods on the space and the slight increase in sharpness needed.

for me the space issue also applied to the right of the face were I would have liked just a bit more of the mane and upper leg included, but given your lens this would have been tricky without pushing him too much to the RHS of the frame.

    love the lighting

oh - and please do post more seeing that you have them

    All,
Thanks for the comments. I'll process more and post them. I have plenty, including more with the space. Also no problem on sharpness, the full res is sharp down the each hair. I may have forgotten to sharpen this one after downsizing though.

This is kind of like along the lines of Artie's tight or wide question. Sometimes I like tight, but apparently others don't it in this case. I liked this one because he appears to be stepping into the frame, and the fact that we fills the frame adds power.

Some of his wounds are pretty fresh. The white spot by his eye is puss, and some of the blood in some wounds is still red (not seen in this small image).

He was looking for his pride.

    Roger
