    Default The Eyes Have It

Lake Blue Cypress is thick with Osprey during nesting season. When you approach the birds by boat they've always got their eyes on you, especially while flying. I was amazed at the percentage of frames where the bird was looking right at me.

For this image I went with a tight crop to highlight the eyes. In the original frame I didn't clip anything, but the 5-6 foot wingspan of an Osprey tends to minimize the visual impact of the head and eyes. I'm not normally a fan of banded birds, but for some reason I like them here.

It really helps to photograph from a boat because you can always get the sun behind you and the birds in front of you. Jim Neiger was expert at it.

Nice Doug! Looks a bit over saturated on my monitor. (At work so you can probably disregard).

Birds flying towards the photographer are one of the more complex issues for autofocus aren't they? What was your keeper rate with this burst from the Mark IV?

The placement of the head and eyes in the lower left third power point makes this very dramatic. The eye contact is super , as is the detail and exposure.

An intense image. Love the catchlights in both eyes.

You have nailed this Doug. Tack sharp, and that is such a piercing stare. Can you explain the rings?

Thanks Stuart. The banding is used for various scientific research projects. A small percentage of the Osprey were banded at Lake Blue Cypress. A significantly higher percentage of Snail Kites were banded, as it is a threatened species.
