Always the naturalist, I like the saguaro pollen all over his face.
I don't like how rough the saguaro is but love the IQ with a 50% crop with my new 500.

    7D 500 4L IS with 1.4 X I, tripod, 7.1 at 1/1250 sec.
    No post processing except crop.

I set my crop at 8 X 10 in Lightroom, or 16 x 20 in PS. But I notice many of you go with various sizes, should I worry about being exact if I have some prints made?

Stan, there is always the question about cropping for the best composition versus cropping for a print size. It really depends on your audience and whether or not you are willing to pay for (or make) custom frames when it comes time for framing. When cropping images for the web I usually go with the best composition. If I need to make a print, I ask the customer if they want the image in a standard crop or not. Some do, some don't...

I like this image for the pose and environment, nice job! For web presentation I would crop the negative space from the right side. Another round of sharpening and a bit more saturation would make this one really stand out. Great job with the WP, I can never get them to look at me! I don't think we have Gilas here, but our Norther Flicker looks very similar.

    Default Another round of sharpening?

Another beginner's question, but do many of you select the bird before sharpening?
And is smart sharpen the way to go in CS5, seems to provide me with the most options but don't know what I'm doing.
And I got lucky on the shot, I've gotten lots of good females (no red on the head) but this was my first good male, although tonight I got one of his sticking his head out the Saguaro hole the 2 made and calling.
Different kind of shot and will go well with an article I'm writing on how many species use the saguaro cacti for homes. The Gila, and to a lesser extent the flickers, although not as numerous, are the excavators but dig a new hole each year. Then we have over 20 cavity nesting species, including some cool little owls that will use the holes in other years. That's where I'll be tomorrow night, out calling the little guys to see if I can get some nocturnal pics and find a nest or 2.
Thanks Kerry for all of your help. It is very appreciated.
