    Default Kingfishers - pair

    Pied Kingfishers.

Taken in Israel a few years ago. The female is on the left with her "crest" raised. As you can see the eyes are almost black rather than brown as I sometimes see in images of this bird.

Full frame with a sliver added to the left.

Another dandy photo. Eye contact with both birds and nearly identical poses.

Perch and bg add to lovely image as well.

Ofer, excellent job with the DOF here. Perch has a lot of character. Excellent symmetry, HAs and open bill a huge plus as always. Thx for sharing.

I like this a lot Ofer. With two birds that do not differ a lot in plumage I like the open beak closed beak and crest up and crest down differences of the two birds.

I have found this a useful image when working out the f stop to use in such senarios. Are these Pied Kingfishers? - they look very simular to those that some of the South African members have posted.

Like the position of the birds and the open bill. Nice detail in the whites and blacks as well.

Tom, these are Pied Kingfishers - the same species as the one photographed by the South Africans members...
If you look carefully on the plumage you will notice that the female has one broken "belt" on her chest and the male has two complete belts. This is the main difference between the sexes.

Got that Ofer - a good educational image. Just looked them up - third most common Kingfisher in the world.

Good double Ofer, and looks like the male is getting excited with the open beak. Both well exposed and sharp, and I like the smooth BG.

Great BG and super use of f stop to get both sharp...I am also very surprised by the good IQ you get on the 2x Ext on the 500 and your 600...Nicely done!

Thanks Dumay - stopping down makes this 500 + x2 combo pretty sharp

Don, since this was a setup intended to get both birds, I placed the perch with these two "horns" in a way that the plane between them will be perpendicular to my sensor. This way I could assume that if I focus on one bird the other will be sharp as well as both birds were the same distance from my sensor. Going f14 also helped with the extra DOF.

I placed the perch not far from the bank where I saw them digging their nest and a few minutes after I place it they were both on it as happy as can be....
